THE POP OPEN: Group D - MONEY

Five tracks for you on the theme of Money. You don't have to judge songs by how they fit the theme, just pick the two you like most - BUT! you can't vote for one you already know ("know" doesn't include "know a remix of" or "know a version of" or "know what it must be but haven't actually heard it before"). You don't have to use both your votes - you can just use one.

And you don't have to be a player to vote - anyone can!

The songs are all in a zipfile here: http://www.sendspace.com/file/ia51px (23 Mb)

And you can get them streamed here: http://freakytrigger.co.uk/ft/2007/06/pop-open-week-2/ (NB if you just hit play you get Track 5, not Track 1, for some reason, so make sure you hit each play track link separately) ALSO: if possible download the zipfile - the streaming tracks are on FT's bandwidth :)

Here's the poll:

[Poll #1005867]

You have until 12noon (UK time) on Monday next week to vote - revelations as to what each track is will be on Friday. I don't think any of them are by Keith Allen this week. Don't forget to vote - I'm sure we can improve on the total of 24 voters for the Sex group!

And last but not least - what would YOU have submitted?

I assume we can't vote for our own tracks, on the grounds that we've already heard them?

[identity profile] byebyepride.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 10:43 am (UTC)(link)
But I think my votes are constrained by having heard one; don't like one; one is mine = leaves two. Just need to rank them now.

also a certain amount of mind-meld amongst the participants in this group, but I remember you saying in the pub that there was a lot of reggae in the open.

stevie wonder ca. mid to late seventies (then the trick would be to find the one that's also about money)

What exactly happens if my group doesn't ever fill up? Do I get an automatic bye into the next round?

[identity profile] jeff-worrell.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 11:24 am (UTC)(link)
I'd have been very tempted to submit "Money" by Yes (Rick Wakeman does Denis Healey impersonation, cue much kvetching about Old Labour's top rate of tax and rudeness about Healey's sexual inadequacy. I am not making this up!)

BEST SONG EVAH

[identity profile] dubdobdee.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 12:19 pm (UTC)(link)
haha that wd be rick "no less than TWO heart attacks from drinking BEER" wakeman, no? i wd imagine he cd very well play a "TOP-RANKING CONSULTANT on matters of sexual non-function" in the movies

(this kind of snark was more pointy before i forgot IT'S A TRAP in re stella myself)

(mmmm pinty)

[identity profile] katstevens.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 12:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, perhaps a risky choice for Track 1? Awesome of course but I've already heard it innit, and by the looks of things so have a fair few others...

[identity profile] lockedintheatti.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I've heard of it and nearly downloaded it recently - but have never actually heard it before. Great track.

I know right!

Though actually I'm REALLY thankful to whoever submitted it - it's one of those mp3s which got lost in the great computer-switch/house-move...

My comedy choice for Money would have been 'Earache My Eye' by Korn (if I actually had it on CD, which I don't). I used to own the first four Korn albums, fact-fans! Anyway, here's an excerpt from the lyrics:

It don't bother me, if people think I'm funny
'cos I'm a big rock star, and I make lots of money
Money, money, money...

Are you talking petsos?
Money, ka ching
Ha, ha, ha
Lots of money
I'm so bloody rich

Lots of money
Lots of muthafvckin money
I get looks
Ha, ha, ha

I own shopping centres, parking lots,
and stocks, and all that sh1t

Ha, ha, ha.

wow i don't know any of these (altho i think i did give track 1 cursory listen in the past, but not enough to KNOW it) and they're all totally ace. bravo selectahs.

track 4 is doing it for me the most right now.

[identity profile] mcatzilut.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 02:13 pm (UTC)(link)
This one was a lot easier for me to do than last week's. Two of the tracks seemed OTM to me (haha. Pun intended), and were also catchy. I liked track one and track three. Track four would've been a close third. The other two tracks didn't really do anything for me. I wonder if this is indicative of there being better songs about money than sex, or whether Sex Week really just dropped the ball. (Some of these tracks really make me feel like Mr. Moneybanks while I'm listening.)

OH GOD. I did not realise my comment re: reggae above would be so

[identity profile] piratemoggy.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
relevant, was what I was about to say before Opera used it's scary sentient hive mind to post that while I was out.

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
There are two really, really clear winners for me here - unfortunately one of them I know. I like the other three but none really pull ahead of the others yet...I will have to return to this.

If one of the tracks wins/has a good showing, I will KICK MYSELF re: last-minute decision to switch the song I fielded of the League of Pop final.

First thoughts

[identity profile] jeff-worrell.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Know track #1. I think this was on Tom's infamous 'birthday mix' CD. Didn't recognise any of the other tracks, although I can identify at least one of the artists.

Track #5 my favourite on first play. Wasn't keen on track #4, although hard to explain why (other than "not reggae enough" ha!).

Actually, for all the talk of mind-melds above, I think these five songs are quite varied in style.

I'd have submitted the Kingsmen's "Money," which is one of my top favorites of the two thousand cover versions of the old Barrett Strong song. Of course, Martin would almost certainly know it, and Jeff and Sally probably, but I think I'd have a chance just because the thing has fast life in it. (That is, I'd submit it if I could find it electronically.)

under consideration

[identity profile] mooxyjoo.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
ugk feat. juicy j and dj paul - like a pimp
willie hutch - if you ain't got no money (you can't get no honey)
junior m.a.f.i.a. - get money
the dirtbombs - broke in detroit (again)

My choice

[identity profile] anatol-merklich.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 11:27 am (UTC)(link)
would probably stand out as v INDIE in this company, e.g.

"Pinstripe Rebel" by Would-Be-Goods
"Heartache" by my lovely STUMP (which they once played using the "Satisfaction" lyrics instead in a Peel session)

unless I picked some Grebt Straightforward Norwegian Rock'n'Roll by Jokke & Valentinerne (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jokke_%26_Valentinerne), who sung lots about being broke.

stevem otm, ace set this I think.

Not daring enough to submit or "Millionaire" by Mekons or "Easy Money" by King Crimson, though they're what came to mind.
