[identity profile] freakytigger.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] poptimists
To maximise the orgafun I will be updating this results post every half hour or so. The top three go through to the next round (see below for next round details). The fourth and fifth placed players bid a sad farewell to the Pop Open, though can enact vengeance by voting.

First Place - "Sure As Sin" by Candi Staton. 14 first-place votes, 52% of total points. [livejournal.com profile] mcarratala wins and is in the NINETIES group in Round 2.

Second Place - "Lady Dont Tek No" by Latryx. 5 first-place votes, 22% of total points. [livejournal.com profile] infov0re qualifies and is in the SIXTIES group in Round 2.

Third Place - "Tickle Tune" by Sex Boots Dread. 2 first-place votes, 16% of total points. [livejournal.com profile] carsmilesteve qualifies and is in the EIGHTIES group in Round 2.

Fourth Place - "Sex And Candy" by Marcy Playground. 2 first-place votes, 7% of total votes. [livejournal.com profile] bengraham is OUT.

Fifth Place... "Warm Leatherette" by The Normal. 1 first-place vote, 3% of total points. [livejournal.com profile] strange_powers is OUT.

ROUND TWO: It's a while away, but I asked for nominations for round 2 themes. I was very tempted by Rick's particle physics suggestion, I was less tempted by my own brain's suggestion of Strength, Intelligence, Wisdom, Dexterity, Constitution and Charisma. But in the end I decided to make round 2 a history lesson of sorts - the six themes will be Noughties, Nineties, Eighties, Seventies, Sixties, and Fifties And Before.

If you win your group - as [livejournal.com profile] mcarratala has done - you get to choose two things. You get to pick which group you're in next round (subject to availability), and you get to pick which group the third-placed qualifier in your group is in (s.t.a.). The second-placed ppl will be randomly allocated to a group. NONE MORE ORGA.

Strength, Intelligence, Wisdom, Dexterity, Constitution and Charisma.

This would have been BRILLIANT!

What are those six?

I thought about the number six a bit, and was surprised at how few things came in sets of six.

Candi Staton = v worthy winner.

I think they're a player's statistics in Dungeons & Dragons but I might be wrong and don't ask how I know that.

I look forward to seeing 'chaotic', 'lawful' and 'neutral' in future rounds.

If Candi hadn't won I'd have given up all attempts to prognosticate anything, incl. what time of day the sun was likely to come up.

Oh, I don't know, my money would have been on the novelty reggae, although 'word of mouth' leading to some negative press during the vote may have hurt its chances.

Ten voters had to disqualify themselves for having heard it before in comparison to only four for the Staton. That was too much of a handicap. At even odds there'd be reason to put money on Sex Boots Dread (though I'd still have gone with Candi), but no way does Sex Boots Dread -6 have a chance.

Looks like it's me versus Keith Allen for the last spot in Round 2. Argh! My head says I lose, my heart says I win.

I take ORGAFUN far far too seriously.

Yes, just checked - if there were 24 voters and 17 of them knew Marcy Playground, that means it got 2 out of 7 possible votes, which is actually a better percentage than the songs that came 2nd & 3rd.

I'll take the 90s and let Carsmilesteve take his chances in the 80s.

Also, I'm fairly sure no one is going to have already-heard my track in Passion, but these results still unnerved me a bit. I was expecting Marcy Playground to beat out Latryx. Actually, I didn't think Latryx was going to place at all - which leads me to believe my finger isn't exactly on the pulse.

From: [identity profile] carsmilesteve.livejournal.com
hmmm, i'm not sure that "finger on the pulse" is the right phrase, the poptimists are a pretty singular group in terms of knowledge and also likes/dislikes. v difficult to second guess i'd say...

The Marcy Playground didn't have a chance, because too many people knew it. But I do think that this crowd are likely to underrate it.

I did like it, but I'd heard it a few times. Though I was convinced that it was either Beck or Pavement.

This is evidence of the strange and woeful effect that CDs have had on pop consumption – there are more songs around, but nobody ever gets to track seventeen, even with albums they actually really like... There's a sea of great unfound songs out there on the third discs of Trojan box sets and the like, if you could ever get to them.
