    But in that case are they unique in that the departing songwriter also went onto (nearly) as big success himself? [that clearly would have been difficult in the case of the manics & joydiv]

    Not exactly fair, if you consider what Vince Clarke's contribution to DM was (everything) vs. Richey (lyrics and image). Bradfield and Moore always wrote the music.
