MODEFAX:
  • Dave joined the band after hearing them rehearse in a scout-hut!
  • They used 'People Are People' as the theme tune for agreeable children's telly programme It'll Never Work!
  • Dave technically died for 2 minutes in 1996!

You get THIRTEEN ticks across all these UK Top 40 hits. Blimey!

I really hate these polls where I think, "Why don't I recognize anything after [year in early 90s]?"

Depeche Mode got so good in the late 90s! We're currently the only two to have voted so it'll be a wait to see if anyone agrees with me on that, but I enjoyed Ultra at the time and think it stands up pretty well now...

"Precious", "A Pain That I'm Used To", "Suffer Well", "Martyr" - YES WE GET IT DAVE!

(Actually is it still not Dave writing the lyrix?)

I had no trouble getting to 13 ticks, and ticked nothing whatsoever post Violator.

In fact this is the first canon for a few weeks where I've had excess tickage - sorry to let "Behind The Wheel" and "Leave In Silence" go, and "Personal Jesus" is worth the tick I didn't give it but I witheld one because i) beginning of the end innit, ii) didn't want it to win.

on the album version, there's a wee extension to the single mix where the words "enjoy the silence" are uttered. doesn't clear up what it means, but at least the words are in the song.

Depeche are weirdly fascinating - at least in the 80s. I can't offhand think of a more rawly, embarassingly, compellingly teenage British band. The incredibly earnestly rotten lyrics, the excited discovery of kinky sex (ALLIED to said lyrics!) (though very much discovery IN A MAG), the descent into moodiness and portent ("Never Let Me Down Again" is, like, the HEAVIEST-HANDED record EVER!), all always redeemed by an ear for a hook and a real feeling and intensity. And then suddenly around 1990, after they got huge in America, it's like some kind of dam bursts and all the bottled-up intensity becomes boring rock pose "intensity" and the gaucheness (tho not the naffness) vanishes and basically they get laid and go rubbish.

haha, this is why "somebody" is SO grebt, it's like pure distilled gedge with a decent voice, and 15-odd years since my obsession with it (via 101) i can still remember almost all of the words...

    and when i'm asleep
    i want somebody
who can put their arms around me
    and kiss me

'Everything Counts' is awesome awesome awesome and the way the crowd sings along at the end of the '101' version causes throat lump (lol i am lame)

Isn't 101 in the wrong order though? I always felt that Everything Counts feels like it might've come before Just Can't Get Enough, as though EC was the end of the regular set and JCGE was the final encore. It would've been a weird song to end an album like 101 on, hence my feeling that it was switched. That album is weird though. Horrific production for a live recording.

"See You" - I assume nobody knows/remembers this as it wasn't on an alBUM

    "Love In Itself"

These two are Gore's best songs, I think.

    Also:

"Shake The Disease" - I think this is the best thing they ever did, really pleading and convincing.

"Stripped" - like "Master And Servant" meets "Everything Counts" with the goth turned up to 10! I also thought "Fly On The Windscreen" was a single around this point but apparently not.

The first time in ages that I haven't just ticked everything I can remember as a first run, I really took against them at some point and never returned, despite rediscovering my love of the Bombast. Is it just all too slow?

Obviously JCGE is four to five times better than anything else getting double-figure ticks, but it's not exactly a popularity contest etc.

Are there any other big bands that have lost their songwriter after a succesful first album and still gone onto find success with another songwriter within the same band?
