By request of [livejournal.com profile] braisedbywolves, it's the Wasiscanon. Normally I would put a picture here but you will have to imagine Liam howling like 1xgibbon instead.

You get SEVEN ticks.

[Poll #974334]

Kat will be back next week with the results of this and other outstanding cani.

I would give every single one of those atrocities ZERO OUT OF TEN. Not one of them has ANY WORTH AT ALL.

My hatred for this band knows no bounds.

Oh I'd easily go as high as 1, maybe even 2, for the first four, but I'm with you after that.

I can't believe how much you people hate them. The value of being sheltered from the media, I guess. (That said, I pretty much immediately turn off the radio when they come on now.)

Wonderwall: Last tick nitemare - I think the first few bars are OK.

The first few bars are the same as the rest of the song the rest of the album.

I found it pretty easy to tick 5 or 6 songs. I never liked 'Wonderwall' or 'Roll With It' tho. I'm sure I will be the only person to tick 'Songbird', but it's not like I listen to it ever or anything!

Hehe cheers Tom for making the supreme sacrifice! Simply Red next week, folks.

Right, back to werk.

I repeat my earlier threat/promise to leave Poptimists if said Simply Red poll occurs. Whether I stand by it is another matter.

Simply Red actually seem like BLESSED RELIEF after this.

I managed to tick 6 that I can bear. They were:
Supersonic
Shakermaker
Live Forever
Cigarettes & Alcohol
Whatever
Little By Little

In other words, they have released one bearable single since January 1995.

I should say that there are 5 album tracks that I like more than any of the singles that they've released - 'Cast No Shadow', 'Magic Pie', 'Don't Go Away', and 'Gas Panic'. And in fact, 'The Masterplan' alone probably would have got close to 7 ticks in its own right, if B-sides and rarities were included in canons - 'Acquiesce', 'Underneath The Sky', 'Talk Tonight', 'Stay Young' and 'The Masterplan' are all much better tracks than anything they ever released as singles.

Conclusion: Oasis - terrible singles, mostly awful albums, superb B-sides. This I think leads me to point the finger of blame at record labels, who clearly encouraged them not to include their more inventive music on the album releases.

And yes, I know I said 5 and only put 4.

It seemed like such a good idea at the time, but now there's a sour taste in the mouth. What was necessary and beneficial on some levels - mass engagement, a convergence of the left field and pop, guitars no longer make The Kids feel sick - just dragged everyone into the mire. A nasty undercurrent of hooliganism accompanies their image in my mind.

A shame they didn't have the imagination as a band to take things forward - they were charismatic and melodic and, most importantly for us, popular. The impact they had on virtually everyone I knew in 1994 is probably beyond the reckoning of this diverged age. They undeniably tapped a vein with a huge, huge audience and burned incredibly bright for a few years. That is pop. But pop is progress too, and Oasis sat on short-lived laurels and stagnated. They betrayed us, and for that will not be forgiven.

They clearly weren't the worst band ever, and I concede the power and spirit of their best songs. But I can comfortably live without ever hearing an Oasis song again.

I agree entirely - the opposite of the greats they sought to emulate in many ways.

it's a shame and strange because Noel actually did like dance music (just before and after 'Be Here Now' he was constantly bigging up Liam Howlett, Goldie, DJ Shadow and obv. the Chems). And 'Scorpio Rising' SHOULD'VE been an Oasis song basically. Not that much of an improvement really but still...

Why do we think this avenue of development was cut off? Did the spat between the brothers just subsume everything? Just lazy?

Songs I actually like = Supersonic, Live Forever
Songs I can tolerate because they sound like better songs by other people = Live Forever

Utter shite = everything else
REAL UTTER SHITE - everything in the second half of the list

I mean Cigarettes and Alcohol in the second category.

I'm shocked there are any ticks at all in the second half of the list, just reading it makes me ANGRY.

Songbird is a rather nice song, The Importance of being Idle sounds exactly like Sunny Afternoon by the Kinks and therefore is rather nice too. Although I might be different than most of you since until maybe a year ago I was sure Oasis had split up ages and the only songs of theirs I had heard were Wonderwall and Champagne Supernova, so I've only heard most of their songs a handful of times.

I have always, always thought they were unbearably crap in every possible way, even (especially?) when they were enormous and I was at school - once they started being less popular, I was accused of jumping on a bandwagon.

To me, their earnest, slogging, dreary aural sludge sounds the same now as it ever did, i.e. the very incarnation of the Antipop. They were, are and ever shall be a shower of dire, incompetent f*cks, and they can't even use the "went downhill" defence because you can't go any further down if you start at rock f*cking bottom.

The 'why are they still going' question is a strange one. Even Noel hasn't hasn't put up a defence to this one since about 1997 and frequently admits in interviews that the only decent thing they've ever done is the first album. Who buys albums by people who openly admit that what they're doing is tripe ?

I am sure that you people are underrating them, but I actually don't think I've heard more than two of their songs, one I liked and one I disliked, and I can't remember which was which, though "Wonderwall" was surely one of them, and some other song not "Wonderwall" would have been the other. Anyway, one of those would have gotten a tick. Don't have time today to go on YouTube and make up for my ignorance, fortunately unfortunately.

Most likely the second single was "Champagne Supernova" - that was released in the U.S. right after "Wonderwall," I believe. The two songs were almost equally popular, though "Wonderwall" maybe a little more so.

Yes! And "Champagne Supernova" was the one that... well, "dislike" is too strong a word, but I liked it less with each passing hour, and as the song was five hours long, the final evaluation was negative.

All Around The World is my favourite song my them - it might be my favourite britpop moment full stop? It's so prog! (I have no idea what prog means, really - I hope it is this)

I've heard all of these except the last couple. I had no trouble ticking six, and exactly six. I simply ticked the ones I remembered that I didn't dislike and that was fine. I honestly can't remember how "Shakermaker", "Some Might Say" or most of the later ones even go.

"Champagne Supernova" and "Don't Go Away" were singles in other parts of the world and might have been borderline ticks, but generally, the sludge is insufferable with this lot and there's an awful lot of it.
