Ahaaa! ABBA just missed out on being the top pick of 1977, losing to Giorgio Moroder and his Donna Summers by one little tick! This week we trundle back to crooner central as the boys take charge of 1960:

[Poll #968044]

I barely know any of these so I voted for My Old Man's A Dustman. Apache deserves to win though.

I was voting on the basis of 'band has 'pirates' in the name' or 'title says 'starry'' etc. Go me.

I only know two, one of which I hate.

Popstars had boring names in those days!

I wonder if it was a kind of backlash against the made-up names era that had just passed (Billy Fury, Duffy Power, VINCE EAGER* etc), in the same way there was a fashion for boring proper names among rappers a couple of (Mike JONES) years ago.

*surely nobody has actually heard Vince Eager.

How can you hate Apache?!

From: [identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com
I have never heard OF 'Apache'!

Bet you know it. And if, amazingly, you don't know it, bet you know something that samples it.

Ah, sorry - it's the Incredible Bongo Band cover that gets sampled all the time, not the Shadows.

Listing for Apache at the Rap Sample FAQ (http://the-breaks.com/search.php?term=apache&type=4).

Still, lots of outings.

Hang on is this the same 'Apache'?!?! I love the Incredible Bongo Band one, I never knew that was a cover! I thought the Shadows were some dodgy rock band! That 'Apache' is amazing! Is the massive horn riff in the original as well?!

It's not a horn riff, but Hank Marvin twanging his guitar. But yeah, that's totally a cover.

NO. NO. NO NO NO NO. STOP THE WRONGNESS

THAT WAS SO ATROCIOUSLY BAD!!!!

Way to turn one of the best party tracks ever into a fucking DIRGE with no life WHATSOEVER.

Incredible Bongo Band now EVEN MORE GENIUS because how on earth did they see the potential in THAT?!

AAAARGH. And it's THIS one you all like?!

Hang on. Sugarhill Gang surely? I'm not even sure I heard the IBB version. So what I've known and loved is...a cover of a cover? whuh?

Date: 2007-04-20 12:00 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] braisedbywolves.livejournal.com
Given that the Sugarhill Gang's listed as one of the samplers of the IBB, I think someone's just being a bit oblivious by assuming they covered it in some fashion. It's not hard to find the IBB version (which Missy samples as well on something - We Run This?) on YouTube: here's (http://youtube.com/watch?v=YkGTzp5BPgc) a version with the most screen famous cowboy of all time in.

Though it is still a guitar playing that horn in the IBB cover, it's one of the million other hooks that's been hornified.
