this is actually one of those songs that i think v.many people have heard, but didn't realize it.

being unusually contrarian, i will say that personally i think it's classic status is a bit more "critical" than anything. i actuallly find it reasonably easy to ignore if you're not paying attention, and the whole point of disco should be the fact that you *can't* ignore it.

that said, i will listen again this evening to see if i'm just spouting a load of cr4p

The very fact that I realised that the Messiah track on Rave '92 was a cover means I must have been aware of the song from an early age! Plus the disco revival in the mid-late-nineties meant Donna Summer in general was everywhere (blimmin Full Monty having 'Hot Stuff' on the soundtrack etc).

I just YouTubed it and have realised I do actually know which one it is; I think I remember the Messiah version that katstevens mentioned, though, not the original but still. I see how it's important but I agree with you, it doesn't completely grab me.

I have to admit I thought it was originally a Blondie song. However, I note they did a cover so that wasn't completely mad.
