Last week's pop pinnacle poll placed Take That AND Coolio as the joint best picks of 1995, with 35 ticks each. Tie-breaker below! This week: The King Is Dead, God Save The Queen? It's 1977 and not a Sex Pistol in sight!

[Poll #959505]

(never let it be said that [livejournal.com profile] poptimists is short of polls...)

My favouritest purchase this year so far = Donna Summer 12" collection.

The 16-minute 'Love To Love You Baby' (not actually on aforementioned collection!) omgomgomgomgomgomg.

Yeah agreed - amazing.

Great year though - two other songs at least that I like as much or nearly as much as Donna. Very few not ticked.

Donna Summer 12" collection

I assume this is the same CD as Disc 2 of the Bad Girls deluxe edition? If so, I agree, BEST "ALBUM" OF ALL TIME

Well, it's very nearly the same alBUM. Yours has "With Your Love" and mine has "Bad Girls" and "On The Radio" instead. Otherwise, track list is identical.

...for almost ruining one of ABBA's best songs.

Before: amazing balance of poptastic early ABBA and sorrowful later ABBA. "In these old familiar rooms..." etc.

After: A-HAAAAAAA! Icon of naff ABBA.

Oh wells!

"Angelo" and "Float On" are forever usurped in my brane by The Barron Knights' parodies of both (on "Live in Trouble" IIRC)

My wife HATES this song.

Is it really some kind of indie club classic btw? I think I remember Sarah claiming so.

as pointed out on the most annoying tv show ever the other day, mull of kintyre is such a very annoying song for going on and on and on and on with the same little tuneless melody. like all blimmin maccer songs rly. bagpipes have nothing to do with it - they can work or not.

Girls School though!!!!!!!

(OK i admit it I have never heard gurls school. I don't like Mull of K but I don't hate it either, brings back pleasant impressions of early childhood, in fact it's the only one of these I remember 'at the time')

i'll admit i've not heard girls school. i remember all of these at the time, and this is possibly my firste ever 'argh what an annoying song'

Disagree. The bagpipes have a little to do with it. But the key changes have more to do with why it's not the worst thing here.

For the record: "Angelo", "Lucille" and "Chanson" all worse.

i would gladly sit through all of those songs several times than put up with Mo'K once. They are a bit rub, but not actively annoying, and even quite pleasant in places! Kenny Rogers has a lovely voice. Chanson has an acceptable level of kitsch. Angelo is funnier than the barron nights version :-D

What a year for the number ones... Even the Rod Stewart is a genuine pop classic, even if it's another pair of Rodified covers.

Best of all though is the battle between top-of-their-class ABBA and the emerging power of Mighty Moroder.

Epic trawl through a dozen or so versions of "Don't Cry For Me Argentina", a song I think is a deathless classic.

I love that article! And I'm surprised that you love the Sinéad best (same here, probably).

The Miami mix of Madge's 'Argentina' is the single campest thing I've ever heard.

I think my Donna Summer receptors were maybe permanently damaged due to my time of not hearing it. Either that or 9:20am really isn't the time for that sort of thing. :/

this is actually one of those songs that i think v.many people have heard, but didn't realize it.

being unusually contrarian, i will say that personally i think it's classic status is a bit more "critical" than anything. i actuallly find it reasonably easy to ignore if you're not paying attention, and the whole point of disco should be the fact that you *can't* ignore it.

that said, i will listen again this evening to see if i'm just spouting a load of cr4p

I just YouTubed it and have realised I do actually know which one it is; I think I remember the Messiah version that [livejournal.com profile] katstevens mentioned, though, not the original but still. I see how it's important but I agree with you, it doesn't completely grab me.

I have to admit I thought it was originally a Blondie song. However, I note they did a cover so that wasn't completely mad.

Either because I've never knowingly heard them* or actively dislike them. Donna Summer being the exception obv.

*More likely I can't put a song to the name. I suspect I'd like the Hot Chocolate record, for example.

this is nonsense. how can you have not heard or dislike both abba tracks, or the jacksons track, or don't cry for me. this is not possible.
