It's March! Time for the return of the 'best new thing' polls - this one incorporating Jan and Feb cos they're both traditionally a bit rub.

Also note the highly relevant bonus question (especially if you are coming out TOMORROW NIGHT for a spot of disco dancing)

[Poll #937683]

Springtime!

Mitya/Groove Armada would be better, I'm sure ;)

I have a Groove Armada sampler (without the Mutya track!) - the one song I've bothered to listen to is loads better than it should be, being by Groove Armada and all, a bit sub-Kish kash but that vein of things is good anyway, but...nothing to get really really excited about.

Box not BIG ENUFF

Sooo much good stuff has come out this year, with more imminent. I think it's going to be a banner year. I have been posting on the ILM "11 faves of the moment fvck" thread to keep track of all the good songs. But I can't access ILM from desktop PC (hurrah) so no link. Possibly top of the pops however are the Ewan Pearson remixes of Cortney T's "Don't Let Stars Get Us Tangled Up".

As far as alBUMs are concerned, these are all worth yr money:

2007
Ono - Yes, I'm A Witch
Jordan Pruitt - No Ordinary Girl
The Noisettes - What's the Time, Mr Wolf? (terrible band name but grebt songs)
Nico - The Frozen Borderline 1968-70 ("Janitor of Lunacy" and "Abscheid" on CD at last! woohoo)

2006 but only just got to hear:

V/A - Elaste Vol.1: Slow Motion Disco: Originals from the Cosmic Disco/Compiled By DJ Mooner (Heaven 17! Chris & Cosey! Rah Band! all in a context you've never thought of them in before)

M.A.N.D.Y. at the Controls (not one but TWO awesome mix CDs - possibly nearly as grebt as the Kiki mix from last year)

[+ something I'm saving for The League Of Pop so no spoilers]

nice to read some enthusiasm and details of new stuff. what about the Air album jeff? i'm not too keen on the single tho - this is all i've heard.

new Dizzee single 'Industry' is kinda eeh for me too sadly.

i've not been making any real effort to hear new stuff at all tho. want to rectify this soon (will have time next week :)

I've only heard one song from the new Air LP too (whatever it was that leaked in January) and it was rub. 'J. Cocker that isn't Joe' can bog off basically.

Basically, it's a compilation of (mostly) early 80s space disco choons with veeeerrrryyy ssslooowwww BPMs. Not life-changing or anything but different. And fits quite nicely with the big Scandanavian space disco and 80s Italo-Disco kick I'm on at the moment.

on the (rub) Kings Of Techno compilation Carl Craig plays Capricorn's brilliant 'I Need Love' at a much slower speed than usual (around 120bpm or just under) for Italo.

The Tracey Thorn song is good but the remixes are better (http://www.juno.co.uk/products/256686-01.htm)! The Martin Buttrich (hur hur hur) mix is proper minimal blip and most importantly DOESN'T FEATURE TRACEY THORN AT ALL!

From: [identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com
Hang on the Buttrich remix on the Dixon Body Language album has her whole vocal! And there's nothing wrong with that. I like her whole album, pretty much!

Really? Fair enough! I admit she's not as nasal as on the Everything But The Girl stuff (which really grates on me).

Ewan Pearson produced most of the album, the arrangements are awesome. She's a bit mannered and polite as ever, this initially grated but now I think it's a pretty good counterpoint to the disco flourishes of the music.

I suppose I'm totally alone in my adoration of Girlfriend by Avril.... Sigh.
But since it will technically be my birthday on poptimism (ok, give or take a few hours), pretty, pretty please???

i've just checked it on youtube. chorus is pretty cool! not sure what to make of the rest of it yet - some of Avril's lines in the verses seem kinda clunky. i was never a big fan or anything tho. it's got a good hyper energy tho, and a very 'Hey Mickey for late 00s' vibe. but awwww she's growin up so fast! aw.

Ditto on the chorus.

I thought about posting something about it this morning, but I could only see the video and figured I should actually hear the song first. She clearly looks/carries herself too grown-up for that image, I think - I find it very off-putting.

Gettin' lots of favorable comment in Stylus Jukebox and on the teenpop thread (is [livejournal.com profile] mcatzilut's favorite song of the last couple of years). It tries too hard in several different directions, and its best strength (the beauty of the harmonies) gets overwhelmed by all the effort, but I give it a recommend.

That was in regard to "Girlfriend"; Ciara also getting favorable Jukebox comment, but I can't claim any of her tracks are new to me.

A bit of comment on Rubinoos on teenpop thread and elsewhere on ilX, my basic feeling being, "And yeah, but the Rubinoos were taking off on the Ramones 'I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend.'" Haven't seen writers credits; think a Rubinoo writer probably would deserve to be in on "Girlfriend" royalties. Legal download of the Rubinoos track, for those who are interested.

I *will* get round to hearing the new Ciara LP eventually, Lex. I'm hoping my local library will have it (they stocked Goodies).

neither have. 'Like A Boy' is lead UK single, out Apr 2 or thereabouts, album follows the week after. that there are cheap import copies all over the place is not something anyone seems to have considered.

It was out early Dec in the US, 'Get Up' and 'Promise' having already been singles; 'Like A Boy' is already out over there. So three singles into the US campaign we haven't even got the first yet. Bloody time-lag. And now I worry that it's too late for 'Promise' to be a single here (though her PR did mutter about how they still want it to be a single, and maybe the R Kelly remix, mutter mutter).

I mean, it's not out officially, but if you want to buy it that's probably quite easy.

What's she like? I can't get into any of this Scandopop really, Annie was an aberration it seems...

Date: 2007-03-01 06:05 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jauntyalan.livejournal.com
she's closer to Annie than a lot of scando stuff in general, and i'd very much imagine you may like this, not in a OMG 10000% way, but in a "oo i rly like" pick and choose manner.

i'd be interested to know what you make of the first track on the album. (my least favourite, possibly because it sounds like euro-imitation r&b)

Glad you mentioned her, jauntya -- this is the first I've heard of her and both tracks so far are pretty good.

Very bizarre hearing/seeing Will You Remember Me Tomorrow and Samantha and then going back and seeing some of her tenative and more straighforward ("Walking on Sunshine") Idol performances.

her VOICE is just so...blah. and she's exhumed what sounds like a particularly shonky Steps demo for her backing.
