finally have an afternoon free at home so spent it listening to [livejournal.com profile] martinskidmore's poptops o'2006 --- and find i am v.conflicted on J.COCKER esq.: i kind of think "(cvnts are still) running the world" is a really AWFUL song, dreary and ploddy in sound certainly, and the sentiment, well, this is a perfect case of "why are the ppl who voice my approximate feelings such tw@ts sometimes?"

i used to LOVE "common people" and then i kind of suddenly went off it hugely, and i'm not sure if i've ever liked another pulp song -- JC just seems a moany old git

A Side Question About Pulp

Who do the 92-94 era Pulp (Pulpintro, His N Hers) sound like? I remember when I heard "Razzmatazz" and "Babies" first, I had an overriding feeling of "Oh this SO reminds me of [x]", where [x] was something on the tip of my brain that I could never quite identify. And then the evanescent not-quite-memory of [x] was overwritten by their Pulpness. So who was I thinking of?

(Something similar happened when I first heard the Knife's "Heartbeats", though the [x] wasn't the same)

I think this is a very important skill in pop songwriting - the ability to make something that sounds utterly familiar and pushes all your nostalgic buttons but different enough that you can never quite put your foot in it. All songs about growing up too quickly should have this quality.

My first thought when I heard them at about that time was Scott Walker.
