A couple of intriguing cross-generational match-ups today, and whatever happens, one Destiny's Child record is going to get the chop.

[Poll #921052]

Voting still open in the previous 16 fites, of course. Tomorrow - Madonna v Britney for the first time, and at least two draws that might break the Lex's tiny heart.

NB: I would give TEN of those full marks. DC are THAT GOOD.

You are 100% correct in rating 4 tracks from the Writing on the Wall above all the later stuff. Those top 4 are just absolutely blisteringly good, although I'd have put Get on The Bus top, it's my favourite Timbaland track ever.

Destiny's Child top 5:

Survivor
Bootylicious
Say My Name
Bills Bills Bills
Jumpin' Jumpin'

A top 5 that could stand up with near any act. As I've said before, if you count Beyonce solo work + "Bonnie and Clyde 03" + Destinys Child you have one of the greatest (top 10, easy) singles acts of all time.

Beyoncé in order:

Irreplaceable
In Da Club
Baby Boy
Ring The Alarm
Work It Out
Crazy In Love
Upgrade U
Déjà Vu
Naughty Girl
Listen
Me Myself And I

'Irreplaceable' probably coming in just below 'Bootylicious' though this is all getting VERY HARD to decide...

Wow. Your top 5 are my top 5 too. Thsoe 5 are unimpeachable. I'd rate "Booylicious" above "Bug-A-Boo" but otherwise can't argue with those 5.

"Nasty Girl" was a single too. Though maybe not in the UK. It had an amusing video.

I actually hate quite a number of DC singles too.

'Nasty Girl' is amazing - just above 'Say My Name' for that. Never a single here though. Ed do you like 'Fancy' off the Survivor album? It is swooping disco greatness, I have a feeling you would like it.

I differ from you in not actually hating any DC singles apart from 'Cater 2 U'. I suspect that what puts you off is exactly what I love about them. I don't hate any Beyoncé solo singles either ('Me Myself And I' is so bland that it could not possibly cause a feeling as strong as "hate").

I would have said that "Listen" was close to hatred with me, 'cept I had to just now look up its title, since I'd forgotten - so I can't really claim hatred towards something that's two weeks old and I can't even remember what it's called.

I, um, listened to it for the first time yesterday, since it has scraped into the Top 40 this week and will therefore feature in the Top 40 poll on Wednesday.

The song is weak, but it's one of B's best vocal perfs, I think.

Yeah her voice at the song's climax is quite something.

"Cater 2 U" is definitely the worst of the worst. But there are some songs that just irk me for some reason. "Independant Women Pt 1" is really weedy and boring. I absolutely detest "Survivor", probably because they all yowl the terrible lyrics as if they were profound. "Lose My Breath", I just never got the love for.

"Fancy" is good.

The only Beyonce solo single I really like is "Irreplaceable". "Crazy In Love" would be v.good without Jay-Z spoiling it.

Oh shhh, Jay-Z is wonderful. Better on 'Deja Vu' though, "now I run the bass, hi-hat and the snare" is so very satisfying to hear.

How can you not love the 'Survivor' lyrics? They are ridiculous and snotty and self-righteous and single-minded and perfect for DIVAS. "You know I'm not gon' diss you on the internet cos my MAMA TAUGHT ME BETTER THAN THAT", etc.

Yes, Jay-Z is OK on Deja Vu, because he's not shouting over the actual BEST BIT OF THE SONG, which he does on CiL.

That line about the Internet is one of the worst lines written by anyone, ever. Also, I find the chorus screechy and sloppy.

Top 5:

Survivor
Jumpin Jumpin
Say My Name
Bills Bills Bills
Bug-A-Boo

For what it's worth, Beyoncé's/Destiny's vocals usually leave me cold, "Survivor" being the only real exception: and yet I still think a lot of this is amazing. "Jumpin Jumpin" was one of the biggest kiddie pop hits of 2000. I just loved the idea of eight-year-olds dancing to something with vastly more complex rhythms than anything the Beatles (for instance) ever put out.
