The second part of the launch-day qualifiers, and these four polls are of particular interest to Prince fans (or Prince hataz) - 3 songs by him and another one written by him. The other group has the tournament debut of the Queen Of Pop.

[Poll #911684]

Tomorrow! Axl vs Bouncy! Kurt vs Jacko! Sexual Healing vs Tender Lovin Care! All coming to a poptimists entry near you.

We don't h8 The Clash as such (OK maybe [livejournal.com profile] dubdobdee isn't too keen on 'em), only their marketing strategy.

Ditto. Love love love everything on the first alb (and "1977" and "Capital Radio" and "Complete Control" and "White Man At Hammersmith Palais"), some on the second, three or four on the third, moments on the fourth (maybe prefer the fourth to the third, actually, but don't own and haven't heard it in 23 years, so can't check), have come to enjoy "Rock The Casbah" after repeated indoctrination, love Joe's phlegmy voice. Clash gave the best concert I ever attended, Palladium in February '79, NYC.

I had no trouble with H because I'm obsessed by that Kim Carnes song, but I agree the other tracks are really pretty good too. Harder choices in the other groups; E: I'm hoping Blackstreet can hold onto that early lead, but I fear they'd get hammered in the next round so is a vote for them a vote wasted in the grand scheme of things?; F: most 'meh' selections yet; G: blimey Sledge/Bangle face-off is HARD.

Group G is a really weak group. Sorry, but I think that's my least favorite Prince song among any that made these Jop polls.

Whoops, I mean Group F for the above discussion.

Group E is harsher I think. Poor Blackstreet, 'No Diggity' deserved better than to go up against 'Papa Don't Preach' right off, it's like at the Australian Open when up-and-coming loadsa-potential just-reached-her-first-final Russian teenager Vasilisa Bardina got drawn against Kim Clijsters in the first round and got double bagelled :(

everything is pop -- the question is:

good pop
good pop in a bad way
bad pop in a good way
bad pop

Pavement are BAD NON-POP in a BAD WAY. I don't care about how bad they are as an isolated entity but to see people actively choosing them over MADGE, JAY-Z AND BLACKSTREET makes me ANGRY.

I hate the way no one who actually ticks the indie rubbish ever comments to defend these mad-and-wrong thought processes!

Liking 'Cut Your Hair' shows that you have a sense of humour. Not a good sense of humour, mind...

Madge is great, but somehow I have just never loved "Papa Don't Preach" - I can't tell you why.

And I have no concerns about my poptimist credentials as I voted His Purpleness across the board.

Papa Don't Preach is a pretty weak Madonna single in my book but then I voted for Jay-Z so my head is held high.

I'm not a big "Sign O The Times" fan, and "Kiss" is in an incredibly tough bracket. Thems the breaks. Also, the best Prince songs (e.g. "Little Red Corvette", "Let's Go Crazy", "When Doves Cry") have yet to appear in these, so there's still hope for the short man.

BTW, Poptimist Prince fans... the Superbowl half-time show on Sunday 4th February will feature Prince (as previously announced), but what I was unaware of until last night is that he will be duetting with Beyonce! And prior to the game, the Star Spangled Banner will be sung by Billy Joel! OMG!!!

He's duetted with her before, at the Grammys:

I am sure I have extolled the virtues of Sister Sledge elsewhere, but HUZZAH for Kathy & co being in the lead! Walk Like 1x Egyptian is good but not good enough.

As you know I have a very low tolerance of the male indie voice but I've never found M Stipe particularly objectionable in this regard, and especially not on LMR.

I think H Duff would be very good at capturing both the epicness and the vulnerability of it, as per 'Come Clean'.

I surprised myself by ticking LMR because I really dislike both Walk Like An Egyptian and We Are Family and there are so many Prince songs I prefer to She's Got The Look. Weak group overall I think.

I think Stipe has a beautiful voice, but sometimes he gnaws on it so much that it gets all chewy. Which sort of happens in "Losing My Religion," but I still love the track and would have tick it if I hadn't preferred a couple others.
