I don't think there is any difference at all. It should either be disqualified or #1 in my opinion - I'm equally happy with either!

Your Kisses... is so much better than Pull Shapes. Though the latter does sound like a 1980s version of the 50s.

Percentage of vote seems more intuitively the right way to rank them.

God I hate the way 'Crazy' has swept the board this year by dint of being a song absolutely everyone thinks is OKish.

I'm with Lex (why should something not liked by so many from a larger voting set be ranked higher?), though possibly some compromise is even better - %age times number of votes?

As for Crazy, it was my third or fourth favourite single of the year (and much my favourite TOTP moment)(and my favourite chart single of the year - Marit Larsen didn't crack the top 40), so it's by no means merely okay by everyone.

But still, like only 27 people voted in the June poll for some reason so it would have been actually impossible for "Maneater" to be number one over "LDN". Whereas 40 people voted in September so "Promiscuous" rates equal to "Maneater", even though fewer than 2/3 of poptimists find it any good at all.

I am doing the Grand Pazz And Jop Spreadsheet now and am using an adjusted percentage system. On the other hand that makes more sense on the P&J/canon 'perm N from X' voting system. On the OTHER other hand it means that in a weak year an OK song can outperform a good song in a strong year.

Incidentally the second weekly poll will be up tomorrow.

One reason I wish you'd run this year's Jackin' Pop as your final P&J poll is that Gnarls would not be a shoo-in vs. Nelly or Justin or Cansei De Ser Sexy or The Knife (may even have trouble vs. Lily or Cassie, though my guess is that "Crazy" would beat "LDN" and "Me & U" soundly).

I am holding off in case Glenn McDonald (or someone) is enough of a mentalist to attempt to combine the P&J and JP data sets this year.

People like me possibly screw things up for Glenn by posting nonidentical lists for each (I'm sure there are ways to take this into account, if he wants to go to half votes and the like; or he could simply choose to discard one of the ballots arbitrarily).

thinking about math too much

In a certain sense, if people didn't vote in the poll, that's a bit like them voting "no" to everything. Of course, the group has also grown over the year, so there were more potential voters at the end of the year than the beginning, making February's songs almost by definition "not as good" as November's.

I really wish all the polls had been tagged properly so it was possible to go back and look at them all at once without trawling through everything else!

Highest-ranking song that I've not heard; Go Team "Ladyflash" (well, I'm listening to it right now). But I only heard "I Don't Feel Like Dancin'," "Red Dress," and "Lipstick" once or twice.

Percentage would seem more meaningful; I don't disagree with Steve's reasons for going with vote totals, I just don't rank these reasons as high. Another problem is there's no way to distinguish nonticks due to disliking a song from nonticks due to not having heard it. Presumably, tracks that charted lower and tracks that tend not to be part of the Poptimists convo don't get heard by as many people, and tracks that don't get played in the U.S. tend to not get heard by voters in the U.S.

My dream improvement for LiveJournal (aside from the 50+ threading thing) would be a table option on polls, so you could have simple Yes/No/Don't Know answers for battery questions like song-list polls.

R&B dominates this list

R&b dominates this list. Am I correct in thinking that it didn't dominate the actual Brit charts, or at least not to nearly such an extent? (And of course there's little on here, whether considered r&b or not, that isn't influenced by past versions of r&b.)

But then again, the UK singles list being based on sales only, one wonders about its relation to actual popularity (the era of downloads give it more of a connection, but the big commercial unit is still the album, though who knows how much longer that will last; the thing is, there are demographic differences between who buys which format).

I don't think you are correct here, if highest chart placings are anything to go by. Stats to follow imminently.

Highest chart placings for the Top 46

This suggests R&B was generally as popular with the UK population as a whole as it was amongst poptimists, while indie and rock records fared rather better with poptimists than with the record-buying public in general.

Rihanna / Unfaithful / 2.097 / 98 / 99
Lupe Fiasco ft. Jill Scott / Daydreamin' / 2.079 / 99 / 98
The Rapture / Get Myself Into It / 2.025 / 100 / 97

Sorry it's not the easiest to read, but you can figure it out - the songs are listed in "alternate" order, and the last number in each line shows their "official" chart position.

Sorry - kept having to chop out characters to fix into LJ's limit. Weighting was just as suggested above: Votes * % of Vote, so that just to give songs with more of a consensus a little boost. (I make no claims to statistical wizardry - I'm sure there are problems with that as well.)
