Haven't hip-hop and rnb been doing well in the P&J since the 80s?

The odd track from Public Enemy perhaps. But above it forms the overwhelming majority. Maybe it's just because there are more tracks above it seems like more!

Way more than just the odd track from Public Enemy; but youse guys didn't notice them 'cause you tended not to be voting for 'em yrselfs. E.g., "Jam On It."

Fair nuff. Will be interesting to see the NME comparison - I think the US was a lot more open to appreciating hip-hop than the UK (insert usual r4c1sm theory here), but it was round about this time (Eminem etc) that everyone realised that there had been great hiphop around for ages and no-one in the press had paid any attention.

Well what was happening in P&J was the crits were onto hip-hop early, but tended to be missing the great stuff from the south (occasional exceptions like "C'Mon N' Ride It") and the r&b they were going for tended to either rock-sounding (Prince) or older-sounding and respectable (Stevie), though TLC was making inroads, and the combination of Aaliyah and TLC finally broke it through for a while amongst critics. But still, a couple of years later they whiffed on Fat Joe/Ashanti's "What's Luv." And they never know what to do with r&b ballads (or any kind of ballads); nor do I, usually.

Interesting point there - when I first heard Country Grammar it was unlike anything I'd ever heard. Ever. That doesn't happen too often! Unfortunately my brain was busy swotting up on late 70s punk that I'd totally missed somehow, and didn't have room for this "young person's hippity hop". Luckily I caught up again later! Man, seeing Nelly do CG live was BRILLIANT.

r&b ballads are very real and beautiful things.
