I think when a popstar previously known for superlative danceydanceyness makes her First Great Ballad, it is one of the most special moments of her career! It kind of confirms that they are not just a very good popstar but a GREAT one, and Beyonce has done it this month. Well done Bouncy!

I don't really like 'Irreplaceable' whereas I could instantly see what was great about 'Promise'. Weird. Maybe it's just the 'negative' theme of Beyonce's in comparison. I can't think of many recent 'lover spurned' ballads I do like.

Actually I don't like that last line very much – to cancel the dinner appointment, she would have had to agree to it first, wouldn't she? In which case she seems undecisive and less in control than the rest of the song tries to show. If on the other hand she hasn't agreed at first, the word "cancel" seems to be there just to force a mediocre semirhyme.

It was a perfectly good little mucky dance record without the vocal on, but then they did the old thing of getting some model to sing over the top so they could make a pop hit out of it. Don't blame them to be honest.

A #1 song with 'Detroit' in the title

'Put Your Hands Up For Detroit' seems quite far removed from actual Detroit-based dance music so it's funny that it's so big in this respect. I mean, it could be ANY city or place in the title instead of 'Detroit'.

I was wondering what it does for the reputation of Detroit as some sort of Techno Mecca tho - and whether most people buying the song would care about that at all or just think 'I wonder WHY Detroit - oh well...'

Winehouse isn't ska at all, she takes more cues from jazz and blues, both of which I like, so I like when popstars copy them.

I'm interested in why poptimists would like/dislike her, she seems to operate in that odd area which attracts some people because of the tunes and personality, but puts others off because of the whiff of J Holland-esque 'authenticity', and with Winehouse it's further complicated by the weird Heat-magazine thing about her weight.

I really liked her first album with the caveat that she didn't quite know how to use her voice properly - I thought she was a great lyricist though, treads the witty/profound divide better than most. From what I've heard of the new album she has learnt how to use her voice - 'Rehab' is a terrific performance - and is bizarrely properly commercially successful! Which I'd never imagined in 2003 but what she does fits 2006 like a glove.

She's marketed in much the same way as L Allen I think, except I like her.

I've only heard 'Fuck Me Pumps' before this and I liked that. Very casual tick given to 'Rehab' from me tho. I suppose I like that she's a grouchier, sleazier Macy Gray but her tunes aren't necessarily better generally.
