After a busy September, October is noticeably quieter on the hit front. But does a reduced selection mean reduced quality? Let's find out...

Balladism

I think when a popstar previously known for superlative danceydanceyness makes her First Great Ballad, it is one of the most special moments of her career! It kind of confirms that they are not just a very good popstar but a GREAT one, and Beyonce has done it this month. Well done Bouncy!

Best lyrics of the month

I love it when they try to get scandalous
Even though they know they really can't handle it
(They can't handle it?) They can't handle it
Tryna take me out to dinner - I cancel it

JtN was totally otm when he said that Cassie's album is the r&b answer to Anniemal by the way!

I really like it too. Even though I don't normally like this sort of song much. I've not heard the Cassie on this list, would be k-interested to tho.

(p.s. I have bought myself & Mr Badgers tix for Ellen A on Sat)

I love the Bodyrox but only the instrumental version. I cannot stand that girl yakking on over the top. GAH spoiling a perfectly good tune!

Rubbish Amy Winelodge! Lily-style indie-ska with a boring Proper Soul Voice (TM) on top and smug lyrics. GROO.

It is an odd #1, but deserves its compulsory Club Popular play as the 'reigning champ'.

I have a horrible feeling U2 and Green Day will be #1 when my son is born :(

Amy Winehouse

I'm interested in why poptimists would like/dislike her, she seems to operate in that odd area which attracts some people because of the tunes and personality, but puts others off because of the whiff of J Holland-esque 'authenticity', and with Winehouse it's further complicated by the weird Heat-magazine thing about her weight.

I really liked her first album with the caveat that she didn't quite know how to use her voice properly - I thought she was a great lyricist though, treads the witty/profound divide better than most. From what I've heard of the new album she has learnt how to use her voice - 'Rehab' is a terrific performance - and is bizarrely properly commercially successful! Which I'd never imagined in 2003 but what she does fits 2006 like a glove.

She's marketed in much the same way as L Allen I think, except I like her.

haha XPOST!

Winehouse isn't ska at all, she takes more cues from jazz and blues, both of which I like, so I like when popstars copy them.

that's what's quite weird about 'Irreplaceable' though - it's not traditional ballad subject matter at all! Kicking one's lyin-cheatin-son-of-a-bitch out is usually a club banger theme. And it's also really fast for a ballad.

I properly like Amy Winehouse but Lily Allen annoys the crap out of me.

You were right about "Welcome to the Black Parade" and I was wrong. I fully understand the price of this admission is dancing to it on Friday.

THEY ARE PLACEBO COME BACK TO HAUNT US THOUGH!

how anyone can bear that awful voice is beyond me - when twinned with unnecessarily jaunty guitars it really adds up to the worst music ever.

"There's nothing on Earth that can save us / When I fell in love with Uranus"

Is this the rudest lyric in a boyband record ever?
