If it's Thursday, it must be 1994! The grip of alt.rock and hip-hop - mostly alt.rock - on the Pazz and Jop poll is close to total, and Anglophiles aren't carrying much weight. This does mean that we've got a lot of tracks to rate that never came near a Now album, though!

NINE ticks out of 27 songs.

I didn't know Aaliyah was around this early!

'I'll Remember' and 'Breathe Again' were awesome.

This is her protege-of-R-Kelly "Age Ain't Nothin But A Number" new jill swing period. "Back & Forth" is about the only track I really like from this time.

Both "Mmmmmbop" and "Wannabe" have more rockcrit cred for being quasi-soul rock 'n' roll and quasi hip-hop novelty fun (which is sorta how "Wannabe" played in the U.S.). Europop isn't really in U.S. critics sights, even when it hits big. Also, I don't know, maybe R.E.M. didn't put out a record that year, or R.E.M. fans died, or something, or alternative stopped clogging up the works. Off the top of my head, Kylie's "Can't Get You Out of My Head" is the only Eurodance song to go top ten in P&J that I can think of, at least since "Pop Muzik" (Human League and the like weren't considered Eurodance here but "new wave," hence could score on P&J).

when did the P&J voterbase start super-expanding? isn't it like 35 in 1990 and 670 in 2005?

No, it was 289 in 1990 and jumped around between 250 and 310 for the next six years (as they probably made occasional efforts to cull the list), then the Website neglects to list a number for 1997 - which may be the crucial year, 'cause by '98 it's up to 496 voters, it hovers around there for another year, it jumps to 586 in 2000, and from there climbed to just short of 800 in '04 and '05. The Interweb plays a role in the expansion. My guess is that the number drops next year owing to shortage of manpower to make decisions about who receives ballots etc.

also, all those songs in the top ten that aren't ace of base are RUBBISH ;)

the bloating of new jack swing into ballad hell (boyziimen, i'm looking at YOU) and all the ladies warblers (whitney houston's "i will always love you" is *directly* responsible for this isn't it?) were never going to score that high cos it was rubbish pop. the only one i'm surprise dthat is missing (apart from ace of base) is r kelly, but "bump n grind" a bit racy for height of real actual political correctness?

Sara Paxton's cover version (http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZlpZt6hb6Fc) is pretty good! And for the record I still really like that Lisa Loeb song.
