Why did the (aggregated) critics think it was the second-best single of the year?

Not that I'm saying it isn't (well, I AM saying it isn't, but that's not why I commented) - it was a minor hit amidst a tide of minor alternative rock hits here, so I'm surprised to see it place so high.

Obviously classic. The chorus of 'Doll Parts' is really astonishing, four wham-bam quote-me slogans which set out this awesomely contradictory-yet-straight-ahead statement of Where Miz Courtney Is At.

It's funny, I don't remember this album at all - the "good one" - despite quite liking the one that came after it.

as i loved pj and bjork at the time, but couldn't stand tori (yes, yes, lex) it has stuck in my head. i can't recall what it was "about" either

Yeah, Amos, Bjork, and Harvey. Which has lead a lot of ~~loser fan fic writers~~internet fans to assume that they're best chums and hang out together, a la the Monkees. Apparently that's the only time they've ever spent more than 30 minutes in the same room together though.

Our maths teacher got pregnant and so we had a replacement for her. This replacement, one Mrs Bvckn4ll, was astonishingly shit at a) keeping a class in order and b) teaching maths, and lessons were mostly a waste of time - mostly exercises in throwing screwed-up bits of paper across the room than anything else. My then best friend and I set about rewriting the words to Madonna's 'Secret' into a Mrs Buckn4ll hate song. The chorus went "Mmm-mmm, we hate Mrs Fvckn4ll". We typed all the lyrics out and then recorded it on to tape using the instrumental version available on the CD single and brought it into school. We were listening to it in the library one lunchtime...when her son, also a pupil in our year, walked in on us. Disaster ensued.

We were nearly suspended but ended up just getting lots of detentions, and we had to write letters of apology. Mrs B apparently had to go into counselling. I couldn't listen to 'Secret' for ages afterwards!

(But I can listen to it now, even if I still sometimes sing "We hate Mrs Fvckn4ll", and Bedtime Stories is a ridiculously underrated Madge album! Silky-smooth white-Sade soul. The ballads, as ever, are the best.)

The chorus: the pang/twist on "Can't Fight the Seether." That was the difference between my ticking it and not ticking it. But not second-best of the year; nor second-best on this list.

One thing no one's mentioned, but some critics (e.g., Xhuxk) will not duplicate someone they've already voted for on the albums list. Don't know how many critics have that peculiarity, and it didn't undermine Nirvana in '91 or Kanye last year.

Anyway, "Doll Parts" shoulda won, and Hole did win the alb poll.

It was like dream-magazine-cover for me because those three were basically my TEENAGE HEROINES (before the cover conflated them) - it wasn't actually a very interesting article though. The strapline was HIPS! LIPS! TITS! POWER!

Isn't Celebrity Skin meant to be the good one? Maybe it's the one with poptimist credibility and Live Through This - which I don't actually possess! - is the rock-canon choice.

Definite Trans-Atlantic disconnect here - the story this poll outlines is one I was vaguely aware of as happening on a faraway continent (oddly I was following US politix a lot more closely than music at the time), whereas one look at the NME singles list (to follow) had me stricken with nostalgic overload. 1994 was personally quite a crappy year for me but music was a good outlet.

Classic, one of the all-time greats, though maddening and inconsistent and perhaps in need of auto-tune. I fantasized appearing on a talk-show her and asking if she would accept cupcakes, as we'd run out of regular cake. Also, at the time I was not willing to admit how good she was.
