If it's Thursday, it must be 1994! The grip of alt.rock and hip-hop - mostly alt.rock - on the Pazz and Jop poll is close to total, and Anglophiles aren't carrying much weight. This does mean that we've got a lot of tracks to rate that never came near a Now album, though!

NINE ticks out of 27 songs.

'I thought Blur had just totally cracked it and knew that Britpop was going to Actually Happen.'

does this mean at this point there was already a sense of what it was as well as what it was going to be? can't remember first uses of the term, and sorry i know we've done this to death!

"Girls and Boys" was also one of those moments for me, although I thought it was some crazy new Eno single the first time I heard it.

Although I eventually came around to the album, I'm not sure I would ever have cared about Blur were it not for that song.

i think select had called it britpop by this point, and it meant suede and blur and pulp and elastica (and st et and the auteurs and possibly gene). going on the basis of supersonic and live forever oasis could easily have joined them.

I always thought of Britpop as rock-inflected by definition, and therefore Saint Etienne were definitely something else. At least that's what I remember thinkning back in 1994-1995 - "hey dance(y) music that i like!"
