I saw the JH3 play live - in Seattle! - in '93. Supported by Madder Rose (I was the only person in the entire venue who seemed to know who MR were. I thought they were better on the night too). My sole claim to grunge-ness.

My most grunge moment = stage diving during a concert by Babes in Toyland (NB: the one and only moment I have done this at a gig, and they were kinda encouraging it, i.e. bouncers were helping people on and off stage, so I was not being a total c*ck).

Funny Tom's not liking alternative rock at this point. There's a school of thought (don't know if I'm part of it, as I've not really gone back to listen in the intervening years) that says alternative got way BETTER - briefly - when it broke onto the charts in the early '90s because then all these wannabes and pretenders came along and turned it into pop music. E.g., I surprised myself today by listening to the Hatfield, possibly for the first time, and liking it. (Not enough to tick it, mind you. Still don't love her little-girly goo-goo voice. Jordy crushes her.)

But actually, hip-hop was the new pop, even if relatively mediocre in comparison to the hip-hop that had been and the hip=hop that was to come.

This year was a weird-ish time for me - first year and start of second year at university, turning 20, I'd nailed my colours to the 'indie' mast a bit but was increasingly unhappy with the actual music, at the same time nothing else seemed to be very inspiring. The BIG THING this year was Select's "YANKS GO HOME" cover and issue - Blur, Pulp, Denim, the Auteurs, Saint Etienne - I went for this stuff 100% and was fully behind the idea of a new wave of self-consciously British modernist pop (what we actually got was rather different).

My favourite American stuff at this point was all at the slightly artier, non-grungy end: post-Pixies albums, and Pavement. I didn't 'get' G-Funk until next year, and in general felt pretty disconnected from pop (the quite un-pop world of university was taking up most of my emotional energy).

Was the YEASTIE GIRLS this year? Surely it was! And how can it not have appeared on the Pazz and Jop poll? (Aside from 'being rubbish').

I think you're probably right! Thing is, I was at probably my least pop ever in 1993 (see post below), so I wouldn't have noticed. I might go back and re-hear some of this stuff tonight, though.

I think there's a Greil Marcus attack on Spin Doctors somewhere that I would perversely enjoy. He thought they were morally despicable. Think it was "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong" he hated, something to do with sexist lyrics, perhaps? Don't really remember. I like "Little Miss" more than "Two Princes." And I probably never even noticed the lyrics.
