[identity profile] katstevens.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] poptimists

Following Wednesday's Thriller poll, it's probably time we sorted out just which of Michael Jackson's UK Top 40 hits are Thrilling and which are steaming piles of Bubbles! I can't even begin to describe all the bonkers things our Michael has done, so let's get on with the ticking!

To keep things manageable I've left off the Jackson Five material (enough for its own canon really) except where Michael is credited separately. You have SIXTEEN ticks to denote your Jacko love!

This is one of those people I always thought "Yeah lets do a Jacko canon", and then I looked at what I'd have to type out and I thought "Sod that". So WELL DONE KAT. But there are going to be several 100%s, surely.

Who Is It?

I had to google to find out that this is the song with the amazing lyric [livejournal.com profile] dubdobdee is always quoting (http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=%22agony+inside+a+dying+head%22&meta=). I might now go and tick it despite not knowing remotely how it goes. Can anyone YSI it?

Is a great song (that I only have on tape); but isn't the one that Mark's always quoting "Threatened" (which unfortunately wasn't a single)?

Or maybe I'm the one who's always quoting "Threatened":

You're trapped in halls and my face is the walls
I'm the floor when you fall, and when you scream it's 'cause of me
I'm the living dead, the dark thoughts inside your head
I know just what you said

Better sound on this one, though it's not the real vid.

My work blocks YouTube - I am trying to think of a good reason why they shouldn't.

Can you argue that you need it for work-related research?

I can, and credibly (our clients' ads turn up there all the time). The problem is though that if they unblock it they unblock it for everyone, and up shoots the bandwidth and bills :)

I can check stuff when I get home anyway.

Could've included 'Why', his 'duet' with 3T from around 94/95.

It always puzzled me that his duet with Stevie Wonder ('Get It') had not been a hit.

Underrated Jacko on this poll

"State Of Shock" - I only heard this for the first time since 1984 recently - it is GREBT, the Jacksons go garage rock!

"Earth Song" - come on, it's amazing. What about the elephants? OK liking it is a bit 'outsider art' but if there's one song that sums up the madness of latter-day Jacko this is it. Good hooks too!

Underrated Jacko on this poll:

"Give In To Me" (though poor sound transfer on this version).

Underrated Jacko on this poll = the first four! Especially "Ain't No Sunshine", one of my favourite singles ever. Amazing vocal performance.

my favourite Jacko video is actually 'Leave Me Alone'. Excellent 'elephant man' dancing sequence and the only video appearance by Bubbles (in a ROCKET CAR!).

also much of 'Moonwalker' is still AWESOME.

'Moonraker' is even more awesome!

Best vid is "The Way You Make Me Feel," where the flirtation is menacing, could be love, could be terror.

This isn't a regular promo vid, but here's the Motown 25th Anniversary performance of "Billie Jean", which may have been what tipped his popularity from rising star to phenomenal superstar.

Billie Jean: The outfit! The dancing! The light up tiles!
Say Say Say: I have always loved the corny acting of Macca & MJ in this video, and the ?! implication that Latoya was Michael's love interest in the video.
Thriller: I thought Michael was legitimately adorable when he turned into the werewolf and couldn't figure out why his girlfriend would be scared of him. The zombies were really scary, though.
Bad: Michael's s&m outfit and crazy dancing manages to scare the crap out of Wesley Snipes! Plus, the phrase "tertusshell glasses".
Black & White: great for the reasons Kat has listed above
Leave Me Alone: A little meta, but very well done.

I would also be remiss in not mentioning Moonwalker, even though it technically doesn't count. Superhero Michael battles extremely ott drug lord Joe Pesci while Sean Lennon cries a lot! Definitely check it out if you haven't already...

PBS Album Rank update: 71% of 'Thriller' is good according to Poptimists. Not bad. There will be a new scientific analysis of another 80s classic on Monday!

I've been away this week so have only just answered your alBUM questions from Tuesday. Now I realise it was probably a bit pointless since the idea you were alluding to there is presumably this "rank the LP tracks" thing. But whatevs, my answers are there for what they're worth.

what he means is "Their DNA is identical to humans when you DON'T look under a microscope."

Disappointing lack of love for Ben, possibly the most moving song in the canon.

Wikipedia: In July 2001 it was widely reported that Carey had suffered a physical and emotional breakdown. She had left messages on her website complaining of being overworked, and her relationship with Luis Miguel was ending. In an interview the following year, she said, "I was with people who didn't really know me, and I had no personal assistant. I'd be doing interviews all day long, getting two hours of sleep a night, if that." During an appearance on MTV's Total Request Live, Carey handed out popsicles to the audience and began what was later described as a "strip tease". By the month's end, she had checked into a hospital, and her publicist announced that she would be taking a break from public appearances.

This doesn't necessarily mean she's mental; some people want to see her as insane or stupid, so they're willing to believe obviously made-up stories about her.

oh ok I heard a bit about that but forgot..I actually caught her appearance on 'Cribs' a few months ago (on the TMF freeview channel) where she got into her bathtub, getting in then taking off her towel.

She just sounds a bit eccentric really, as does Elton.
