I ticked it (just barely) but "Erotica" was when Madonna went from sexy to erotic, and got way more boring. The track's good, but what it portended wasn't. Dance tracks as art moods, or something.

The Prodigy actually toured the USA in '92 which I always found bizarre. Did they register at all among critics there tho as 'acceptable face of rave' or whatever? Interesting that Utah Saints did so well considering how critics seemed indifferent to K Bush there.

no way! Erotica is totally my favourite madge album - it and Bedtime Stories are so underrated. I love its coldness, its art-ambition, its moodiness. It's definitely the queerest of her albums, and it's got the most mystique about it.

This is a really important year for me because it was the point at which I got into current-popular-young-people's-music, but none of it seems really 'culturally important' or to have had very much impact on the world outside 1992, which is interesting. There's also very little here that I've started liking recently, it's mostly 'liked around the time' or 'do not recognise' - it was very easy to pick nine or more, but I can't find a 'worst'. Which perhaps makes it a triumph for the generic, as a year?

Well, I love "Justify," but you've kind of got a point. I'd say that the background Kravitz helped to drive it along and make it rock. It was basically sampled from Public Enemy (right?). "Justify" was when Xhuxk told me that Madonna was getting boring, but I didn't believe him.

How can anyone be disappointed by this year?

With most great years it seems as if all the greatness is in a definite vein - banging Eurotechno or old-skool hip-hop or whatever. But in 1992 it's on all fronts! The bosh is well represented; the r&b and hip-hop is brilliant; even the alt stuff (eg KD Lang, and that REM song isn't bad even though I dodn't tick it) (let us IGNORE the crappy peppers) is on top form. It's all good!

Small point of order: where is Tori Amos? This was the year she emerged! I didn't get into her until '94 though.

I was actually gonna pick 'Erotica' as most important because it showed Madonna making 90s transition i.e. still popular, still doing good pop. But I think I actually was also a bit bored of her at the time - 'Deeper And Deeper' came out at the very end of the year and it was a grower. Now I adore that track and think it's the best on the album. Epic disco pop rules.

My ticks this year are hugely coloured by going to university - "Jesus Built My Hotrod" got a tick cos it was played at clubs so much, for instance. My musical identity took a real battering at University - I felt quite insecure about it, despite being one of the people in my social circle most obviously "into music". So I fell back on a lot of indie as a comfort move, at least at the end of 1992 (my first term) - because it gave me something to talk to people about, rather than trying to push the more (relatively) obscure old stuff I liked.

For about two weeks after it was released I would loudly proclaim REM's Automatic For The People as my favourite ever record. By the end of the year I pretty much hated it. (Except for "Drive", which I ticked here). These two weeks unfortunately coincided with me meeting a lot of my future friends.
