Back after a short absence it's the Pazz and Jop poll for 1991 - a particular blockbuster of a poll this with TEN ticks to be shared between 28 singles (would have been 29 but for C&C Music Factory cropping up last year too).

Also - what happened to the "legacy" singles artists that have tended to crop up in these polls? (Fogarty/Stones/etc.) I guess Prince in the NPG era counts, but was there a shift in who was getting polled around this point? Or did the Year Punk Broke (TM) focus all minds on the present?

This is not a very exciting list? Loads of the ones I like from here, I like other versions better ('I Touch Myself' - Scala Choir; 'Losing My Religion' - Tori Amos).

+ isn't Losing My Religion by REM one of the worst things ever released? Vapid and sententious (OED: 'addicted to pompous moralizing').

Greil Marcus on the Geto Boys song is my favourite thing ever by him. (It's my favourite thing ever by them too, but I've heard less of them than I've read of him).

I had trouble ticking nine, and I nearly didn't tick Nirvana. I only did because I wrote my A level General Studies essay on Kurt Cobain. I will be interested to see the NME/MM polls for this one, I imagine the UK to be WAY superior to the US around this time. Get on one matey!

Ha! I ticked the first six. Don't think this ever happened before. The last minute of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is up there with the last minute of "I Am Me" and "Frankenstein" as a great explosion gargling vocal drama, passion, extremity.

I missed Nirvana almost completely - between school and university, was delving back into older music and hardly paying attention to current indie - first time I heard it was in a pub a couple days before Christmas. Wasn't that impressed really. By the time I went to university they were still huge, of course, but they have never clicked with me. I did buy a check lumberjack shirt around this time though.

I like 'Losing My Religion' because it has a MANDOLIN. I suspect that if I'd heard the Geto Boys or LL Cool J tracks I would not have to defend it though.

I loved Teen Spirit at the time, although I cooled on the rest of the album very rapidly (apart from Lithium) and became archetypal first-album-was-better arsehole. (But I never complained about them 'selling out' -- it was purely that I liked the feel of it better). My dislike of it now is probably over-reaction. I downloaded a whole compilation of vintage grunge and not much of it stands up well now, although there was some nice nostalgic moments.
