I had to really struggle to pick a ninth, plumped in the end for a Eurythmics song I'd never even heard of as continued reward for 'Sweet Dreams'.

Really really love 'Smooth Operator' and Sade generally.

Why are so many charity-type records making these lists? This is supposed to be a critics' list, right? I can't imagine stuff like Band Aid 20 making the equivalent list these days.

Charity records were new and exciting back then. Also stellar cast list - We are the World is a pretty rotten record though IMO.

version of events i heard was that the couplet above was the original and then they got into the studio and Sting was like "Bono, dude, I see a problem here" and Bono was all "eh?" - I really like it, as a story, a snapshot of those exciting early days of the charidee record. (of which the best btw is clearly "hands across america")
