It does the fills, but the synths absolutely make it. Like Tom said half-a-dozen years ago, there's so much to be said about the lyrics and Jarvis that people often forget that the whole band plays a blinder.

when you say things like die and kill, and the like. even taken purely rhetorically, it can be disturbing when repeated. and not what i call pop.

But saying things like "die" and "kill" is very pop. At least where I grew up it was.
