I have too much work on to be reading Popjustice, but...

What else is going down the sh1tter before/after its time? After yesterday's 1994 discussion I nominate: decent boybands (eg East 17, 911, NSYNC).

OK, for shows that shouldn't have been killed, I nominate The Tube. But TFI Friday is sleeping solidly in the grave and should not be disturbed under any circumstances.

Oh and I nominate the recent live music licensing laws, and the ones before that. Both crap for different reasons, both restricting small-time live music where lots of bands got their starts.

also, the indie charts, when the bands who couldn't afford videos either had a picture of a lava lamp or a dog dragging something around the lawn. Or a picture of some fey indie herberts.

or the pixies, taking three minutes of slow motion video to jump over a rock.

OH YES! Man. I thought that was some art statement at first.

what was it for? i am thinking veloria.... and me too, i thought it was deliberate.

it's a bit like when mtv back in the day, unsure of screening MBV's Soon video in case there was something untoward in the indecipherable lyrics, asked creation for a print out. i think the story goes they made it up.

actually, it's nothing like that.

I still miss The Chart Show - I didn't get music TV until a couple of years ago so I've missed out on lots of videos. Or maybe I'm just nostalgic about taping my favourite Video Vaults each week, and the comments my townie friend made about Alma Matters.

Since you mentioned it, let me use this opportunity to voice something that shocked me years ago. What the hell happened to N*Sync and Backstreet Boys? Indie bands and "rock" groups will stutter along for years with bad, poorly selling albums. Both of those bands essentially vanished at the peak of their career (while Westlife refuses to die). Am I wrong in thinking that neither group so much broke up to break up, as broke up because there was no label support behind new albums? Surely both of them could've counted on a million-seller, even if their audiences dropped drastically.

The Backstreet Boys are still going, you know! They released a great album last year and had a very successful world tour, even in the UK. It wasn't as popular in the US as their previous work but that couldn't be expected, it still sold well enough for them to be planning another even though Kevin has left.

I still believe (or want to believe) that if someone put together a really good boy band, like Girls Aloud but with nads, they would sell bucketloads. Trouble these days is that there's so much pressure to be successful straight away, and if their first single only got to 16 or something they'd be deemed a flop. Grrr.

They did, it was V and everyone (except me and a few very dedicated McFly fans) ignored them!

I miss the craptacular Oxford Channel music video hour between four and five in the afternoon and way into the night. Now they only do it in the evenings and it stops at midnight- rubbish. :( Many a long hour did I spend attempting to work out how my parents' VCR worked well enough to record the video to 'Seven Ways' by Abs.

Also missed: music magazines other than Rock Sound being readable. There's a sentence I never thought I'd write but it's true, it being the only one left with remotely sane journalists with actual interest in music at the helm. If it'd only sort out a pop review section it would basically be perfect. :/ I mean, when you look at the demise of music media it's not just poptimists that are starved of anything remotely good but also rockists, who have to endure the ignomy of Kerrang!'s subjection to the Emap treatment in the same way Smash Hits was for those of a pop inclination and indieists, who have to look at NME and realise it is them.

The iPod generation is basically ruining everything, to my mind. Then again, I'm succumbing to increasing delusions that I'm the last sane voice left pleading for the use of CD players in this difficult time so everything I say should probably be immediately discarded.

I miss The Face. :( :( :(

The question is, how much of this was caused by the Spice Girls and how much by Busted?

Oh, we have that channel. We might still do, I actually haven't even looked at it since the day we moved in. Ooh, just checked and it's still there. When is the music on exactly? It's football now :(

It starts about ten at night, I think- sometimes later sometimes earlier, basically, when the programmes end and then goes on until Midnight. It's brilliantly shit, although the totally awesome advert for some computer shop on the Cowley Road will no longer be there. :(

They're just playing Passion FM (another Oxford thing I'd totally forgotten about) at the moment and it's some rap song involving Jay-Z. Very disappointing! The only time I've ever seen a music video on there it was Blue's One Love, and this was only last year so I guess it shows some promise for out-dated pop music.

HANG ON

Glad I'm not the only 911 fan on Poptimists! They are often unfairly maligned, yet they were really ace.
