So, is it me or is 'Prangin' Out' by The Streets - the single version, anyway - which features Mike Skinner barely a jot - the best thing The Streets have done in forever? This is not a coincidence, is it? Are there many other examples of songs on which the titular artist does very little*, to the benefit of the song?

* (Very little of what they are known for, that is.)

The last Mariah Carey song didn't have her warbling at all, instead using her voice as one might a synth pattern. It was grebt.

The version of 'Professional Widow' by T. Amos that got to #1 leaps to mind.

No, I just remember most remixes that feature Ludacris crowding the original artist into maybe one verse and that's it, or just the hook. Partially this is because there also tend to be a lot of other people along for the ride. I could be wrong.

Yeah but Luda's guest verses are so great not just because he's funny and has good flow, they're great because he's so adept at bouncing off the original artist (which so few guest rappers bother to do) - I've rarely thought that he makes the original artist look less good, in fact the reverse, he makes them sound even better while sounding good himself.
