Last week showed the patchy knowledge of Poptimists where 1958 was concerned, however hip-wiggling burger fan Elvis was the winner with a respectable 29 ticks. Not so much love for Jane Morgan, who failed to receive a single tick! Bad luck, Jane. This week we fast forward to a year when, thanks to the age restrictions on Livejournal, I am 100% sure that all you lot had been born! It's one of my formative pop years - 1994.

Video for the Pack's "Vans." Don't know whether to call this "hyphy" or "snap" or what, but this is the catchy, spare novelty hip-hop track, knocking "Wait" and "Play" and all the rest down to has-beens. But what's going on here socially? Ghetto teens wooing skatepunks? Emulating them? Love the dancing, the slides, very friendly. Also makes an intriguing differentiation; Vans are multi-colored, not coke white. (If that's what they're saying.)

So, is it me or is 'Prangin' Out' by The Streets - the single version, anyway - which features Mike Skinner barely a jot - the best thing The Streets have done in forever? This is not a coincidence, is it? Are there many other examples of songs on which the titular artist does very little*, to the benefit of the song?

* (Very little of what they are known for, that is.)
