RIGHT. Let's get this one over with. Now 61 is not a very good Now album. The impression of badness is enhanced by Now's sudden decision to move all the great pop tracks to the arse end of disc 2, part of the general loss of faith in pop that was sweeping the blogosphere world in 2005, at least before this very community came along to SORT IT OUT.

Gwen Stefani is your winner on Now 60, by the way.

Agreed. That whole wacky Dangermouse/Dan The Automator cartoon hip-hop scene annoys the hell out of me though. It's probably my musical Kryptonite.

there's a brilliant Ugly Duckling video where they're playing a 'Rap Rap Revolution' game i.e. have to rhyme in time to the beat, mention certain cliches at right moment etc.

i'm not sure if this game really exists but it should.

i don't have a problem with that sort of hip-hop generally. i suppose it is just the sense of superiority SOME exponents and fans of 'backpacker' are believed to have over types of hip-hop that put people off. fuck a Jurassic 5 tho.

I very much suspect that the sneering backpacker is a mostly mythical beast, a sub-species of "PC gone mad". They might exist in small quantities, but Jay-Z fans enjoying feeling 'oppressed' by them far outnumber any real self-righteous Common disciples (in the same way that Ann Coulter/Melanie Phillips – delete according geography – get so much more airtime than 'PC elite silencing them'). - Mark M

I must say Damon Deys or whatever it's called was a HUGE disappointment.

I can see why people rate the singles off it, but the rest of the LP sucks big ones.

Well it would but only because they don't have enough singles. If you factor in album tracks then there are LOADS better than Wake Me Up.

It also sounds a bit like Republica.

I really really loved 'Wake Me Up' when I first heard it but it lost its initial lustre - nevertheless it's still very much Any Good At All.

Can't extend that to the by-numbers dullness of 'So Good' though.

However many times I play WWTNS I still can never recall how the chorus to "Wake Me Up" goes afterwards. Probably the weakest or second weakest song on that LP. No ticky.
