The controversial Now 60 brings us into 2005. Controversial? Apparently so as the official Now site DOES NOT LIST ITS DETAILS. Looking at the tracklist you might - well I might - say it's not a vintage comp, but there's enough chewy material here to provide some good comments box sport.

"Love Machine" was Girls Aloud's first winner after several near misses - it won by 11 ticks over its nearest Scissor-shaped rivals. And "Some Girls" beat "Hey Ya" in the play-offs for Now 58.

I'll Stand By You

I haven't heard a record since that does what this does half as well; the way the secondhandness of the lyrics give shape and shock to the moment ("there's nothing I confess/ could make me love you less") they come out as shiningly true despite everything.

I stand by you in this as well. One of the best things about the way they sing the lyrics is their relationship to the song as a standard: suddenly they're not famous popstars any more, they are girls in their bedrooms with dreams and aspirations and all that again, singing along to a song on the radio because they're feeling sad and it's their best friend right at that moment.

i had an awful night about a year and a half ago (not heartbreak but massive/massively unfinished essay related) where i just listened to this song and smelt the inside of an empty tube of jaffa cakes for about two hours until i felt better.

the nicola lines on it are all enunciated so pathetically, it's amazing.
