What was the first Britpop record?

What was the last Britpop record? And the last Britpop band?

the lex just claimed this: is he korrekt?

my response = it is NOT COMMON CERTAINLY but it has happened, like a kind of harmonic convergence within recorded music after -- with things after never the same as before

for example:
i. stones
ii. sabbaf
iii. slade/pistols (=essentially the same thing anyway)
iv. pulp fiction inspired resurgence of SURF sound

obv plenty of bands have been one then the other but not simultaneously, and some have even switched back again

*note use of ACTUAL here must not be employed in any kind of essentialist slipperiness, bcz that kind of behaviour is INDIE

false metal = a subgenre of metal
fake rock = a subgenre of rock
bad pop = a subgenre of pop*

(also ps wow there is tons of grebt stuff on these threads!)

re the stones: the overlap year is 1966, when they were constantly in the charts, but "rock" had not yet firmed up as a "thing" (it was being done but not yet being pointed at unerringly) -- what's key to THEM tho is that they were already doing the "fake" thing as a self-marker -- they didn't play blues or R&B (old skool def) or country or soul, they played Fake Blues, Fake R&B, Fake Country, Fake Soul (not to be confused w.plastic soul!) (or indeed RUBBER SOUL!) -- later they purged their popness and became the "greatest rock'n'roll band in the world", and a certain amont of back formation and redefinition occurred

as actual overlap i would personally propose: under my thumb and mother's little helper

One listen, only one track i want to relisten to right now. Maybe two. (Meanwhile I'm in love with the new Futureheads album.)

We could talk about how crushing it is to find your relationship with a band has hit total apathy (another PSB album? oh right), and how a band you once loved fit to busting, a part of your identity has gone a bit meh. We could talk about new/old passions. The PSB's self described "imperial phase" (and that theory applied elsewhere).

Or we could say, well tune X is ok, and the lyrics are fun, where are the exciting bits, blah?

Let's not talk about if they are pop or indie. they are both, and it doesn't matter. they ARE pop, and we talk about that here

The fourth and last quarter-final is perhaps the most eagerly awaited - two form teams with a commitment to stylish, attacking pop. [livejournal.com profile] cis' Japan are tournament favourites, but [livejournal.com profile] atommickbrane's France have shown they are no pushovers and this game could well go either way. This game could decide the whole tournament, some pundits are saying - we at FIPA feel that may be disrespectful to the other surviving teams, but see what you think...
