answers to the poptimists taste quiz )

Well done to boyofbadgers, commiserations to everyone else.

In actual Poptimists content, how dreadful is that new Girls Aloud single? :( STOP WITH THE BALLADS WESTLIFE ARE GOING TO GET THE XMO #1 ANYWAY bah.

that these two creatives* had made a video for ELP's cover of "Dreadlock
Holiday"** involving a FRANKLY RACIST STUFFED MONKEY***, and they decided to
show it to the interweb's [info]FREAKYTIGGER for his considered opinion

anyway - as they were subsequently told me - [info]FREAKYTIGGER DANCED to this
video in so wild and lewd and unconstrained a way that they decided NOT
TO RELEASE IT, and also never to make another pop video!

*they looked like GORILLAZ, i now remember
**haha I WANT TO HEAR THIS SONG NOW (again) (i heard it in my dream)
***it wz a sort of rasta-ized flat eric:

So on Now 3 Cyndi Lauper came through a very strong line-up to win it. NOW 4, firmly in mid-late '84, has more songs than before (meaning an even HUGER poll), but to my eyes fewer clear contenders, but there are several intriguing love-it-or-hate-it options too and as every yr forthright views are welcome in the comments box, as are requests for YSIs, real actual YSIs and so on.

This one had the pig on the cover, hurrah.

Two YSIs for yr pleasure. First is Wicked Wonderboys by Bertine Zetlitz. As far as I know this came out this year, but it is very retro, and feels like it could have been made any point between the end of 1979 and the start of 1990, if you see what I mean. It's breathy, gentle and nearly flawless, beautiful pop. This one came up while trawling for songs with ribbon in the title (my version of whatever Tom's hacking yr music taste thesis turns out to be). I was actually looking for 'She Wore a Yellow Ribbon', but ended up with -- amongst others -- A Smile and a Ribbon. Very upbeat, delightful and more than a little kitsch, Patience and Prudence (1956 one hit wonders, but not with this song, or so says Google) manage to sing this without the slightest trace of sauce, although in adult hands (lungs?) one might be tempted to imagine that it is a smile and a ribbon and NOTHING ELSE which she is wearing.
