The History Of Pop Part 58 aka All I seem to get is the other other

Let's pause a moment to reflect on Now 57, which saw our second ever 100% vote - for "Toxic" - and also the highest ever percentage score for a non-winner ("Milkshake"). We will not see its like again. Probably.

And now for Now 58 - also packed with fine tracks, with attention surely resting on the debut of Kristian Leontiou the SONG THAT BROKE THE INTERWEB, Outkast's "Ha Yeah". Included somewhat late on this Now poll, which otherwise celebrates the summer of '94. Let's see what you think about it.

[Poll #771642]

TICK ME.

"Hey Ya" didn't really break the internet, but it did kinda draw the lines for the battle that came after the original 99-03 pop wars.

i may not even know who this trendy young joss stone character is, but :

[identity profile] the-roofdog.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Erm, do you mean the summer of '04 ?

[identity profile] celentari.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Ppl! Sizza Sistas have not disappeared, they are about to tour and release an album and stuff. And I am seeing them this week, woooo.

It's gonna be trubblin, you and me bubblin

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)
This is Blue's finest moment! Even better than 'All Rise' (which is QUITE FINE INDEED)! The promo cover featured BLUE BUBBLES DO U SEE.

Otherwise - this really was an Age of Gold, it isn't merely the reminiscences of an elderly at all.

Re: It's gonna be trubblin, you and me bubblin

[identity profile] juror8.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 01:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"Fly By II" is the best Blue single, everyone knows that.

Re: It's gonna be trubblin, you and me bubblin

[identity profile] jeff-worrell.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. In fact, this is the only Blue song I like. More ticks needed!

f*ck it, i faked it

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 01:07 pm (UTC)(link)
for that line alone Frankee would WIN the battle of the sexes - but there are many many reasons why she is Any Good At All and Eamon is Not Any Good At All, chief among them that she has a lovely voice and he has an annoying boy whine.

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 01:12 pm (UTC)(link)
she was hott, but that doesn't = tick for me

in '89 i started to get mine

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Right, so, wtf is Estelle talking about here. Periods is the obvious answer but at age 9? I know v little about periods but is that not a little early?

Nevertheless one of the finest debut singles evah. One of my colleagues used to employ Estelle you know. She was "very quiet".

Re: in '89 i started to get mine

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 01:14 pm (UTC)(link)
'get mine' usually means HOT LOVIN' i thought - but that doesn't really work either. maybe she just meant 'first kiss'.

[identity profile] awesomewells.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
If The Show is beaten by Hey Ya! I will be a very angry man. Although I ticked the racist song as well so it might be all my fault.

The song I actually want to hear most right now is...

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Nina Sky. Because it is COMPLETELY PERFECT for those days when it's too hot to move or think or do anything except let the gorgeous gorgeous melody and sweet sweet vocals drift over you.

Beverly Knight - Come As You Are

Please tell me this was a Nirvana cover.

Annoying things on this Now

[identity profile] juror8.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
1) Estelle namedropping several important black sitcoms but finding no time to show love to Porkpie.

Britney

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
'Everytime' is Britney Spears' best single ever.

Re: Britney

[identity profile] juror8.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
We've been through this before Lex, it's still not as good as "Lucky".

Although Cobain > Stipe > Dorff > Spears is the funniest alleged sexuality relationship ever, so "Everytime" gets bonus points for helping it along.

[identity profile] jeff-worrell.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 01:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't have this Now! but I do have a Belgian equivalent comp from the same era with many of these tracks on it.

I dug it out at the weekend and noted that it also contains an early effort from one of 06's breatkthrough (in UK) pop acts, Juanes. For the life of me, i can't remember how it goes but I shall play it tonight.

It also has Alcazar on it! Remember them?

COME ON RACHEL

[identity profile] jauntyalan.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
A vote for Hey Yeah is a VOTE FOR ANTI-SEMITISM

Jews don't catch Lex's bus: they do not enter the pop debate.

nO-Zone?

[identity profile] blue-russian.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
No words on Dragostea Din Tei? How often, really, do people get totally worked up by songs in a completely unintelligible language? Sure it's a bit of a novelty, but...

Re: nO-Zone?

[identity profile] byebyepride.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
It is total genius, and I genuinely can't remember an equivalent -- i.e. a (good) chart hit (and I remember it hanging around for ages, which could be wrong) in foreign.

Dip It Low

[identity profile] jel-bugle.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Why is Christina Milian doing so poorly? This is clearly one of the best songs ever.

I didn't vote for Outkast, because they* still show that video all the time, and I'm sick of it.

*The Hits, and the other freeview channel that is VH1 but not quite.

AGAIN WITH THE KEANE HATE

[identity profile] jauntyalan.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
How can anyone hate this song. it's pretty meaningless, but a gorgeous sound.

[identity profile] carsmilesteve.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
everybody's changing is the least worst keane song, i'll give you that, but it's still keane...
