tATu won the Now 54 poll with Girls Alound a close second. Both groups are in it this time, as are Justin, R Kelly and 50 Cent - and the Fast Food Rockers! "Oh, 2003paws", as we wouldn't have said in 2003.

Lots to talk about here, so why don't we get on with it?

TICKNITION (REMIX)
From: [identity profile] zenith.livejournal.com
We really were spoilt for POP in the summer of 2003.
From: [identity profile] cis.livejournal.com
we so were! the whole first batch of these I was going "omg and this! and this! and..." It doesn't really matter how the rest drops off so dramatically because the highs are AMAZING.

Category 4 for me please. Except I never LOVED R Kelly, just felt vague approval towards him. 'Ignition' is so fucking weak and insipid and NOTHINGY.

He's done much better since as well - the immediate follow-up 'Snake' is completely amazing! "LIKE 2 GORILLAZ IN THE JUNGLE MAKING LUUUVVVV" he bellows at one point.

'I Believe I Can Fly' >>>>>>>>>>>>>> 'Ignition'

Pinnacle of R's career - the sadly-forgotten 'Be Careful' which garnered about five ticks :(

i believe i can fly is tepid blehness. think how you react to james blunt - that's how i react to that.

It's beautiful! And the lyrics are amazingly empowering but have that tremulous edge to them, like he's only just discovering he can fly. Blunt is creepy and stalky.

The other great thing about IBICF is that you start of assuming it's yr common-or-garden self-empowerment mettyfor, but by the end such is R's conviction that you start to worry that maybe he is being qute literal and he does believe he can fly.

Alex attempting to convince the world that I Believe I Can Fly is an inspiring moment of lyrical perfection is beyond even your mighty powers of persuasion.

It is astonishingly awful. Ignition is great though.

Even apart from the lyrics I Believe I Can Fly has a massive tune and some OOMPH rather than burbling away without ever stumbling across a hook of any sort like Ignition does.

"It's the remix to ignition
Popping FRESH out the kitchen
Mama rolling that body
Got everyone in here itching
Sipping on coke and rum
I'm like so what I'm drunk
IT'S THE FREAKIN WEEKEND BABY I'M ABOUT TO HAVE ME SOME FUN!"

i came round to 'Ignition (Remix)' after months of hate - thanks to ILM i suppose (see also 'Sk8r Boi')

it's all about learning to live with good tracks by people you can't stand innit.

"Ignition (Remix)" is this century's only good drinking song.

Hi, Lex, I'd like to introduce you to Cast, The Doors, and a disappointingly large amount of Cypress Hill's career.

Digressing here: I have a live show where he sings about a minute of "Ignition" in between songs when someone's mobile phone goes off with that ringtone. It's a good moment.
