2. Lots of people who previously didn't like R Kelly go "This is an amazing pop song."
3. Lots of people who still don't like R Kelly but like other pop go "Hold on it's R Kelly I think it's overrated"
4. Lots of people who previously DID like R Kelly get all precious and go "It's rubbish he's done much better."
5. "Ignition (Remix)" gets argued about a lot but still inspires one of the best ever ILM threads.

we so were! the whole first batch of these I was going "omg and this! and this! and..." It doesn't really matter how the rest drops off so dramatically because the highs are AMAZING.

Category 4 for me please. Except I never LOVED R Kelly, just felt vague approval towards him. 'Ignition' is so fucking weak and insipid and NOTHINGY.

He's done much better since as well - the immediate follow-up 'Snake' is completely amazing! "LIKE 2 GORILLAZ IN THE JUNGLE MAKING LUUUVVVV" he bellows at one point.

It's beautiful! And the lyrics are amazingly empowering but have that tremulous edge to them, like he's only just discovering he can fly. Blunt is creepy and stalky.

The other great thing about IBICF is that you start of assuming it's yr common-or-garden self-empowerment mettyfor, but by the end such is R's conviction that you start to worry that maybe he is being qute literal and he does believe he can fly.

It is astonishingly awful. Ignition is great though.

Even apart from the lyrics I Believe I Can Fly has a massive tune and some OOMPH rather than burbling away without ever stumbling across a hook of any sort like Ignition does.

I really REALLY liked the whole Happy People/stepping thing he was doing about a year after this.

I love Ignition (Remix) unreservedly, I think it's a lovely, light, summery, funny, feelgood song. "Snake" is a great banger though and I'd be far more likely to play it 'out'.

One of the funny things about "I(R)" was how it was a rare single that could get critical positioning traction in two directions viz.

"I love pop and see how open minded I am, I even love R KELLY"

"This is a lame track that only know-nothing dilettantes wd like"

Each of these stances is very common but not usually about the same record.
