A very mixed bag, Now 49 - for every Destiny's Child making a (somewhat delayed) bow in a Now poll, there's a Dido. For every Mis-Teeq, a Marti Pellow. A number of strong candidates should make for an intriguing poll.

The last Now poll was the closest for AGES, with Gorillaz finally beating Shaggy and Nelly F by one vote - "Clint Eastwood" is the lowest-rated winner ever, which makes up slightly for it being the first one I don't actually like.

Ashlee does something like this - "I'm bigger than that" - on "Boyfriend," and it really really bugs me, because she's lying and saying she's rising above something when quite obviously she's bitching out Lindsay and isn't rising above anything. I don't mind her bitching out Lindsay, but I do mind her being a hypocrite and pretending that she's above the bitchery. If you're gonna bitch, bitch, don't get all pious about it. Ashlee, you're better than that.

Funny story. Kara DioGuardi told an interviewer that when she was working with Lindsay on A Little More Personal (Raw) "Boyfriend" came out, and Lindsay was so incensed that she wanted to do an answer song, and Kara spent a lot of time telling her to put it behind her and talking her out of it. Of course, Kara was one of Ashlee's co-writers on "Boyfriend."

HAHA OMG that's AMAZING! Did Lindsay know this?! I assume she must have done but then Lindsay + coke does not necessarily = best awareness of who the people around you are.

False piety suits Beyoncé more because she so rarely tries to be a sympathetic narrator, and this is exactly her appeal (whereas I think, from what I've heard of Ashlee, that she wants the listener to empathise with her), this single-minded focus on Having Her Cake And Eating It (And Rubbing Your Nose In Your Lack Of Cake). With Beyoncé there is this sense that anything you can say about her, she will always always be better than that, and confident in this quality.

Of course, ironically these lines are (I think) sung by Kelly, who is not better than anything...

(On the other hand, Beyoncé's hypocrisy is a welcome relief in the Destiny's Child catalog 'cause for once she's an alive, petulant, jerk of an adolescent rather than a cold sophisticate.)

Haha "x-post", though I love most of the DC catalogue.

I rarely try to articulate what it is I love about DC's pettiness, piety, hypocrisy and snootiness because that Village Voice rvw of Survivor did it so well - of course the rvw then concluded that this was why the album failed, rather than why it was one of the most impressive pop documents of the century so far (and still not as good as TWOTW)!

Oh, I like the DC catalog fine, but most of it tends to register as "fun" ("Jumpin Jumpin" still gets play on Radio Disney), whereas "Survivor" is the one I'm feeling.
