A very mixed bag, Now 49 - for every Destiny's Child making a (somewhat delayed) bow in a Now poll, there's a Dido. For every Mis-Teeq, a Marti Pellow. A number of strong candidates should make for an intriguing poll.

The last Now poll was the closest for AGES, with Gorillaz finally beating Shaggy and Nelly F by one vote - "Clint Eastwood" is the lowest-rated winner ever, which makes up slightly for it being the first one I don't actually like.

[Poll #740592]

THE TICKNESS

Mis-Teeq

1) One of the most important AND great pop groups the UK has ever produced, and the high-water mark of the 2-step crossover
2) Lickin' On Both Sides is a terrific album and I highly recommend it to everyone - there is even a GOTH track called 'Secrets Of The Night'
3) Alesha is back with a solo album this year, which will have Richard X doing stuff on it!
4) Alesha was gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous
5) So why are they languishing behind so much?

With a UK FLAVA!

5) Erm, prolly cos this is their least well known single?

Wasn't Scandalous in the charts for aaaaages? I'm sure it sold more.

could've been lower singles sales generally at that point tho. they're probably roughly the same.

i think 'Scandalous' is just fresher in people's minds as it was more recent.

Scandalous was the 40th best selling single of 2003 (according to wikipedia), whereas All I want wasn't in the top 40 of its year, so Scandalous was a bigger relative hit. But single sales were much lower in 2003 so you could well be right. They are still both great songs though

Surely not! Third most well known I always thought - that brilliant line about "All I need to know is that the world is mine"!

I don't think they're important really. Why would they be?

Maybe in that they played Glastonbury? Some odd, inexplicable crossover aspect with indie types?

I didn't even know they played Glastonbury! I guess in that they were basically the perfect synthesis of pop project and underground sound, I don't think any other UK act has straddled the pop/cred divide so easily/equally/effortlessly/fantastically.

Basement Jaxx aren't a pop group! They're pop, yes, but they're not the kind of faces you'd find in Smash Hits RIP.

I'm sure the Jaxx have appeared in Smash Hits at least once or twice.

your point is good tho re pop/underground. altho i do think Mis-Teeq were less underground than Jaxx are pop group!

Basement Jaxx AREN'T a pop group though! They're a production duo. Mis-Teeq fulfil the formal requirements of pop (ie girl group/boy band &c, youthful and fresh-faced and 'cool') while at the same time drawing heavily on the underground (also Alesha's MCing = more hardcore than half the grime MCs since). Basement Jaxx are def pop but they're not a Pop Group.

It is a great album! WHAT DOES THE TITLE MEAN? 'Why' is my favourite record by an all-girl band, I think, post 1970 anyway, almost impossibly perfect.

I like to think of the title as Mis-Teeq's take on the Khia dictum of "lick my pussy AND my crack".

'Why?' is exquisite. Who hasn't seen a suited-up young businessman on public transport and wanted to rip all his clothes off there and then?

Right.

(After some thought I am reluctantly retracting my statement above, but it is still impossibly wonderful)

Sitting looking in the mirror
Like Alice through the looking glass
Life's a never ending journey
Be careful not to go too fast
Sometimes I can't help myself
From falling in too deep
I know it may be hard to tell
Your love is calling me
Oh-ah, all I want to be, oh-ah
And away we go
Oh-ah, all I want is (oh-ah)
Gonna get on the mic
Gonna make you wine

All I want
Is to be with you
But I just got to live
Live my own life too
All I need to know is that the world is mine
I snap my fingers and everything is fine
That's all

1) Hear hear
2) Couldn't agree more
3) Really? Wow, I'm SOOO getting that when it comes out
4) Spot on
5) No idea

Mis-Teeq were, frankly, the dog's proverbials. Criminally under-rated. Unfortunately, they've got a lot of very good competition on this Now, including my favourite Destinys Child, Eve's only decent single and my all-time favourite BOSH BOSH song (Ian Van Dahl)
