Top 40 Singles Of 2006 Poll #4: April

Sugababes 'Red Dress' came top in the March poll which seems like a good thing even though it's a track from a 2005 album and was re-recorded with the rub new one. No time to muse on that much further though as it's time for the next lot - will it be an April shower of sh1te? judging by the list below, not quite - some real corkers here: [Poll #739256]

'Crazy' and 'SOS' are probably the clumsiest and least interesting vaguely-r&b songs listed (though both still v good obv), certainly compared to Nelly, D4L, Trina, Sean Paul - yet they are the ones out in front!

Cos they're pop as well as r'n'b? I dunno. TBH apart from the Trina I can't remember any of the others.

I guess, they were certainly the biggest hits, and certainly less 'formally' r&b/hip-hop than the others.

Lex, where do _you_ stand on "S.O.S." and other American R&B artists taking inspiration from contemporary British pop stylings rather than ye olde rappers?

potentially classic obv - Brooke Valentine's 'Blah Blah Blah' and Christina Milian's 'I Can Be That Woman' are probably the best efforts so far, though I'd argue that Milian's coming from more of a French house angle (obv r&b taking cues from house and electro = best thing evah). Neither of the 'Tainted Love' samples have been as good as that though - Kiley Dean's 'So Caught Up' is actually a bit crap, she's completely overwhelmed by the sample. Rihanna is less at its mercy but still doesn't quite make the song her own.

Sean Paul one would be even better if it wasn't for the fact that the Applause riddim had been widely used already - it's actually pretty lazy for him, but still great.

The Nelly one sounded boring production-wise but as usual had some good lyrical/delivery aspects - but I seldom really appreciate that side of things. Would say the same about Trina - uninteresting production with empthasis on vocals and words - but angry spurned lover thing not doing much for me at the mo.

'Crazy' isn't so much clumsy as just slightly colourless - the sample in 'SOS' is my least favourite thing too, it feels v clunky and somewhat grating, it overshadows the song rather than being integrated into it.

That's what I said when it first came out, but over time I have realised I was talking rubbish - the song has LEGS! As does the singer.

Yes I do like it still - I just think it's a big step down from the awesomeness of 'Pon De Replay'. I will be checking out the Rihanna album for sure though...
