I tried this on ILM during the Rough Guide era - the object being to create a compilation CD that would showcase the best of reality TV pop. The rules being:

- only 1 track per artist
- only artists and bands who formed/rose to stardom through a reality TV show
- only ace pop please.
- nothing pre 2000 (interesting cases of pre-Popstars/Pop Idol RTV shd be cited in the comments though)

So help me out. I've done the easy ones for starters:

Girls Aloud - No Good Advice
Will Young - Leave Right Now
Kelly Clarkson - Since You Been Gone
Hear'Say - Pure And Simple
Gareth Gates - Anyone Of Us (Stupid Mistake)
...

Over to you! (Foreign entries particularly welcome)

Ashlee Simpson, people

ASHLEE SIMPSON "Pieces of Me," though it is only the eighth greatest or so Ashlee song (1. "La La" even though they botched the production and she oversings 2. "Shadow" 3. "Love Me For Me" 4. "I Am Me" 5. "Autobiography" 6. "Undiscovered" 7. "L.O.V.E." and these are all great and so are songs like "Coming Back For More" and a bunch of others and this list keeps changing), but it is the one that exploded out of the box and has been her only big hit so it's representative and it's GREBT! I never ever saw the show, actually, but people tell me that if I had I would be in love with her even more than I am.

MIRANDA LAMBERT "Kerosene" (she finished third in the Nashville Star competition)

KELLY OSBOURNE "One Word" (folks, this is a great great song, a rolling lava dance song, one of the best Linda Perry productions ever, better than "Get the Party Started" and as good as "Dear Diary")

CARRIE UNDERWOOD "Jesus Take the Wheel" (which I haven't heard in a while and I never loved but it definitely should be there for your consideration)

ERIKA JO "I Break Things" (she won the 3rd Nashville Star; "so if you wanna hold me boy, you better watch your heart, 'cuz I break things," fun video, she's totally cheery while dishes come crashing down around her, then she dances about as amps explode, walls crumble, panes of glass shatter)

Also, I just want to say I saw Lance Loud perform with the Mumps back in '79 or so.

Yes- 'Break Things' and 'Kerosene' are must-haves!

Also I do still love 'Wasabi' by Lee Harding.. 4th round knockout from Australian idol or thereabouts.

Liquid Dreams! O-Town! Which also entails 'Let U Go' by Ashley Parker Angel!

Eden's Crush - Get Over Yourself

Rosie Ribbons - Blink

Wasabi might be easier to take if you never endured his kiddie punk versions of "Eye Of The Tiger" and "Roxanne".

ALSO, best O-Town single was "Love Should Be A Crime", even if it was just a facsimile cover version of a Swirl 360 number.

Is Ashlee really reality TV? I know Jessica had her programme (has she done any decent songs since? Surely she must have, but the only good Simpson Sr songs I know are pre-TV) but I don't know about Simpson Jr.

Of course, if we're bending the rules to include popstars who went on to have TV shows (as opposed to popstars created on TV shows) we have the entire BRITNEY catalogue open to us! Hurrah! 'Everytime' clearly the best.

Not bending the rules. The Ashlee Simpson Show was on MTV and among other things was about the making of her first album. She wasn't an established singer/pop star before the show. The album sold something like three-quarter million copies in the first week, because TV'd already established her. (Not that I saw the show; I've no TV. Never saw Seventh Heaven either, which was a show she acted in, though I don't think she was the main star.) Of course, having a famous sister helped her get attention (but also ensured that a lot of people would never take her seriously).

Yes, for instance "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'," lauded here.

I'd never heard of The Ashlee Simpson Show!

I kind of class Jessica's 'Boots' as "competently OK" rather than "great"...

Well, maybe by "competently OK" you mean "unlike any other dance track ever" or something. I'd certainly give it points for strangeness, even if I didn't love how it sounds.

Info on The Ashlee Simpson Show. Also, it turns out that Autobiography only sold 398,000 in its first week, which was still enough to put it number one.

Ashlee had played Cecilia in Seventh Heaven from 2002-2004, but the show had been on the air since 1996 and continued after she left (I'd thought it ended last year, but apparently episodes have appeared this year): "The Camdens, a Christian family living in California, face the challenges of trying to live a moral life in a confusing world. Jam-packed with thinly disguised public service announcements, this show may seem very conservative to its viewers (what with its constant anti-sex and anti-drug messages, its parents' hysterical responses to their children's' misbehaviors, and its teenage female characters' fixations on getting married)."
