I tried this on ILM during the Rough Guide era - the object being to create a compilation CD that would showcase the best of reality TV pop. The rules being:

- only 1 track per artist
- only artists and bands who formed/rose to stardom through a reality TV show
- only ace pop please.
- nothing pre 2000 (interesting cases of pre-Popstars/Pop Idol RTV shd be cited in the comments though)

So help me out. I've done the easy ones for starters:

Girls Aloud - No Good Advice
Will Young - Leave Right Now
Kelly Clarkson - Since You Been Gone
Hear'Say - Pure And Simple
Gareth Gates - Anyone Of Us (Stupid Mistake)
...

Over to you! (Foreign entries particularly welcome)

David Bisbal came second in the first series of Operación Triunfo but I can't access any of his videos (http://www.portalmix.com/davidbustamante/) from work. I remember he is better than Rosa (the series winner) though.

On his face. Smug git. I would stand on his balls, but he clearly doesn't have any.

God I'm feeling obnoxious today!

Yes Darius should be in there. Have I mentioned how near I came to teaching him before he quit his degree (i.e. not very near, but near enough).

Ania (Dąbrowska) - Glory (http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=F03CFCDA0B856561)
Competed in the first Polish Idol in 2002 (Ha ha, I always thought she won since a major signed her and financed a video, but just discovered that she finished 8th!) Almost certain to be too mopey for Lex, but I think it's fantastic.

Fabrika - Pro Lyubov (http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=C64A543E0CEE06EC)
Came in second in the first season of Russian "Star Factory" in 2002. More like Fame Academy than Idol, in that there was more or less 24-hour broadcast of their lives in a house. A week before the final concert (in Russia's equivalent of Wembley!) the producers announced they would form two groups, a boy-band and a girl group plus allow a comedy rapper to compete. The comedy rapper has become an MTV DJ, while both groups have carved out reasonably successful pop careers.

G-G-Gates should be removed swiftly.

Fantasia Barrino - It's All Good (pretty fab r&b courtesy of American Idol; she has a strange croaky voice like a less annoying Macy Gray (I do like Macy G though))

Javine - Best Of My Love (reasons here (http://ilmixor.blogspot.com/2005/02/javine-best-of-my-love.html); 'Real Things' and 'Touch My Fire' also fantastic, though not as good as this. Javine signed my copy of Plan B once, you know)

Alex Parks - Maybe That's What It Takes (the barrel is being scraped but this is a reasonably decent ballad)

arguably Paris Hilton - Screwed as well.

Chenoa was another contestant from the first series, who I think ended up going out with David Bisbal. Her single Cuando tu Vas is the best European reality TV pop song I've heard.

Ashlee Simpson, people

ASHLEE SIMPSON "Pieces of Me," though it is only the eighth greatest or so Ashlee song (1. "La La" even though they botched the production and she oversings 2. "Shadow" 3. "Love Me For Me" 4. "I Am Me" 5. "Autobiography" 6. "Undiscovered" 7. "L.O.V.E." and these are all great and so are songs like "Coming Back For More" and a bunch of others and this list keeps changing), but it is the one that exploded out of the box and has been her only big hit so it's representative and it's GREBT! I never ever saw the show, actually, but people tell me that if I had I would be in love with her even more than I am.

MIRANDA LAMBERT "Kerosene" (she finished third in the Nashville Star competition)

KELLY OSBOURNE "One Word" (folks, this is a great great song, a rolling lava dance song, one of the best Linda Perry productions ever, better than "Get the Party Started" and as good as "Dear Diary")

CARRIE UNDERWOOD "Jesus Take the Wheel" (which I haven't heard in a while and I never loved but it definitely should be there for your consideration)

ERIKA JO "I Break Things" (she won the 3rd Nashville Star; "so if you wanna hold me boy, you better watch your heart, 'cuz I break things," fun video, she's totally cheery while dishes come crashing down around her, then she dances about as amps explode, walls crumble, panes of glass shatter)

Also, I just want to say I saw Lance Loud perform with the Mumps back in '79 or so.

I like 'One Word' for obv. Visageness, probably more than over-saturated 'Get The Party Started'. tho if freakytigger were to pluck a Kelly O tune he'd plump for 'Come Dig Me Out'.

Yes- 'Break Things' and 'Kerosene' are must-haves!

Also I do still love 'Wasabi' by Lee Harding.. 4th round knockout from Australian idol or thereabouts.

Liquid Dreams! O-Town! Which also entails 'Let U Go' by Ashley Parker Angel!

Eden's Crush - Get Over Yourself

Rosie Ribbons - Blink

From: [identity profile] umlauts.livejournal.com
Natalia - I've Only Begun To Fight (second on Belgian idol. DISCO DISCO DISCO DISCO etc.)
Sarah Whatmore - Automatic (OW! Best UK reality pop single not by Girls Aloud)
Rosie Ribbons - Good Thing (tragically shelved after her first two singles didn't do so well, sounded like a smash to me)
David Bisbal - Buleria and Oye El Boom (MEGA danceable spanish pop par excellence, both must be heard)
Alex - I'm Still Alive (shouty girl from Polish idol)
Christian Forss - Unforgettable (classy, smooth 80s-ish pop number, came 2nd I think on Finnish Idol)
Antti Tuiksu - Yritta Ymmartaa (another Finnish idol reject. Just gorgeous - that string sample is aamaazing [delib. typo] and I have no idea from where it comes. He's ugly and can't sing though.)
Gimmel - Sydan Plys Sarkekaa, Roviolla (more Finns! They won Popstars, and decided to be a girl rock group instead)
Carrie Underwood - Jesus, Take The Wheel (This really is astonishingly good)
Bardot - I Need Somebody (the Australian 'Popstars', were not that bad really, this single was uptempo goodness)
Sophie Monk - Inside Outside (was in Bardot. Written by Rob Davis. Would have been an easy #1 if Kylie had sung it)
Kate D'Araugo - Faded (last Australian idol winner. Very Veronicas-esque single. Previous runner up Shannon Noll has some passable songs, including an A1 cover. A1!)

"What You Need Is" is GRATE. Also also also, Ainslie Henderson's Nice Jumper's single "Keep Me A Secret" was fab too.

Oh! Also The Preluders' "Hotter Than You Know" was great too. They were the German Girls Aloud, except they LOST to the boys (called Overground, who do dull ballads, including a spectacularly awful ballad version of Real Life's "Send Me An Angel"), but this song sounds a bit like "Free Your Mind" by En Vogue.

I'm going to upload some of these and put them in a f-locked post.

Wasabi might be easier to take if you never endured his kiddie punk versions of "Eye Of The Tiger" and "Roxanne".

ALSO, best O-Town single was "Love Should Be A Crime", even if it was just a facsimile cover version of a Swirl 360 number.

OI!

"The reality pop programs began with the New Zealand (in 1999) and Australian Popstars (in 2000) and the phenomenally successful format then traveled around the globe, creating groups in Belgium, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Japan, Argentina, the United States, France, and Ireland."

"Well known for world firsts, New Zealand scored another slightly more dubious one in the late 90s with the first ever TV show based on the idea of putting together a pop group and filming what happens as they audition, rehearse, promote themselves and record their album." Is Ashlee really reality TV? I know Jessica had her programme (has she done any decent songs since? Surely she must have, but the only good Simpson Sr songs I know are pre-TV) but I don't know about Simpson Jr.

Of course, if we're bending the rules to include popstars who went on to have TV shows (as opposed to popstars created on TV shows) we have the entire BRITNEY catalogue open to us! Hurrah! 'Everytime' clearly the best.

Not bending the rules. The Ashlee Simpson Show was on MTV and among other things was about the making of her first album. She wasn't an established singer/pop star before the show. The album sold something like three-quarter million copies in the first week, because TV'd already established her. (Not that I saw the show; I've no TV. Never saw Seventh Heaven either, which was a show she acted in, though I don't think she was the main star.) Of course, having a famous sister helped her get attention (but also ensured that a lot of people would never take her seriously).

Well, maybe by "competently OK" you mean "unlike any other dance track ever" or something. I'd certainly give it points for strangeness, even if I didn't love how it sounds.

Info on The Ashlee Simpson Show. Also, it turns out that Autobiography only sold 398,000 in its first week, which was still enough to put it number one.

Ashlee had played Cecilia in Seventh Heaven from 2002-2004, but the show had been on the air since 1996 and continued after she left (I'd thought it ended last year, but apparently episodes have appeared this year): "The Camdens, a Christian family living in California, face the challenges of trying to live a moral life in a confusing world. Jam-packed with thinly disguised public service announcements, this show may seem very conservative to its viewers (what with its constant anti-sex and anti-drug messages, its parents' hysterical responses to their children's' misbehaviors, and its teenage female characters' fixations on getting married)."

Daniel K - Heartbeat (wacky German DSDS contestant)
Kjartan - Standing Tall (Norwegian Idol winner)
