The History Of Pop Part 47 aka We were makin love by Wednesday

Oops - She did it again - WON A NOW POLL that is. Britney topped Now 46, and deletion was averted by a respectable showing for Aaliyah after much lobbying. Less controversy on Now 47 I'm guessing, featuring comebacks for U2, Spices and All Saints, and debuts for David Gray, Nelly and leather-lunged Anastacia.

[Poll #736520]

All this and DANE BOWERS too!

I cannot describe how much I love Time To Burn. It's one of the most brutal techno-pop-filled pieces of music I own. Most boshing thing to appear on a Now so far!

I thought Darude would get the love in this vein last time round but it got overlooked!

That plus Storm plus Zombie Nation = holy trinity of hard house

Storm were aka Jam & Spoon. Spoon died in January sadly. I'm not sure what Jam is upto now.

REALLY?!

Zombie Nation by Kernkraft 400, nicht so?

I saw Dire Straits supporting Talking Heads in 1978, I believe it was. They seemed like a pleasant enough pub band then - all Sultans Of Swing stuff, no overblown dismal takes on Two Little Boys like Brothers In Arms at all.

interesting Now poll subplot draws to unnoticed close

This is the first Gabrielle single I have not ticked (only cos I probably never heard it). Let's see whether dubdobdee's loyalty to the eye-patched one continues!

I've noticed she is getting somewhere near to Phil Collins, UB40 and Gary Moore in the NOW! ubiquity stakes.

My local library has loads of Gabrielle on CD. I must check these out (in both senses of the word!)

at the time it was a 'victory for pop'...

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-05-26 12:58 pm (UTC)(link)
...but six years on surely we all agree that Victoria wuz robbed of that No 1? 'Groovejet' is great but 'Out Of Your Mind' is insane and bonkers and something approaching masterpiece quality.

Victoria getting her No 1 out of the way so early on could have CHANGED HER LIFE!

Nelly T Elephant

Was anyone else confused at the time betwixt Nelly the rapper and Nelly the Furtado?

Re: Nelly T Elephant

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-05-26 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember a 'hilarious' caption in some crap magazine (Q probably) along the lines of "wait 10 years for a Nelly in the charts and two come along at once ho ho ho".

it's good actually - nice euphoric chorus, somewhere between SAW and the mid 90s Danny Tenaglia-type remixes

Blimey, Azzido Da Bass are still going! They released a whole load of new stuff in February! And did a really good remix of that Olav Basaski ft Michie One track!

Thing is, Dooms Night was never as good as Flat Eric, was it?

Re: Pure Garage

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-05-26 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Azzido Da Bass was just Timo Maas under another name wasn't it?

the same Maas who recently did a track with Brian Molko, BLEH (and another one with Kelis i think)

I don't know how i feel about it now. didn't like it much at the time but there's some essence of it that's pleasant, also found on Fragma's 'Toca's Miracle'. I'm very super-fickle when it comes to lightweight trance-pop tho.

FWIW I think this one is much better than most of the other new Now albums people have been raving about.

Max in Poptimist dip?

[personal profile] koganbot 2006-05-26 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Seems to be the worst Poptimist showing ever for Max Martin. As of now, 6.7% (It's My Life), 56.7% (Lucky), 26.7% (Gonna Be Me) averages to a puny 30%.

(I ticked bovi but the song clearly is longing for Lohan to become a tab queen and sing it instead.)

Re: Max in Poptimist dip?

[identity profile] nicolars.livejournal.com 2006-05-26 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Lohan singing this would have been fantastic. But Bon Jovi's singing voice is just too smarmy and annoying, I couldn't bring myself to vote for it. If anyone else had done it would have been genius.

I like It's Gonna be Me and voted for it, but I could see where people who love Max might not like this one -- Justin sounds a little bit like a goat on it.

You can try to resist, you can hide from my kiss...

Only 36.4% for "Can't Fight The Moonlight" hurts me in my head. As it stands, she's being outscored by Robbie Williams rhyming "sodomy" with "Sean Connery". Plz defend choices people.

Time

This is depressing. These songs seem like just yesterday, but what, this is from about 5 years ago, yes? :(
