where is the poptimistically correct "it is also really good but their respective greatness is incomensurable without some form of rockist background assumptions"

Date: 2006-05-10 02:04 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dubdobdee.livejournal.com
i don't think commensurability is rockist per se: but the anti-rockist metric has to be determined in the social context of here and now -- it isn't based on pre-established inherited or shared assumptions

(viz it is ROCKIN TO SAY FH VERSH = BETTER bcz of the GLEE IT WILL ENGENDER in the COMMUNITY WE SHARE) (only works if combines with non-dreariness of versh in question possibly)

you got me, i just threw rockism in there cos it's today's word. however there is a sense that the question is asked without context, hence background assumptions are the default, and the fight there is against the defaults that rockism can bring. or something.

Who is going to stamp their feet at me if I request the option of "I've never heard the Kate Bush version, but from the Futureheads' version I'd like to"?

Differences between Futureheads take on this 80s pop song, and Prydz/Cabin Crew/Uniting Nations et al's takes on other 80s pop songs? Are there any? Reduce song to basest form to make it more danceable is surely the ultimate poppist aim.

Date: 2006-05-10 02:33 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] juror8.livejournal.com
Do they come from the same place though? A sense of "Look, there's some fun (or at least fun as our fanbase understand it) to be had in this song!"

(My favourite ska punk cover is this Off By One's take on "Torn".)

indie in attitude tho, which is the indiest thing you can be. and contrasting that (deliberately?) with pop just heightens that

NONE OF US HAVE AN INDIE ATTITUDE!!!!!!!

OK then only three poptimists are SANE while the other 22, who are apparently happy to have this song existing in the world, are COMPLETELY MENTAL!

The Futureheads took one of the most glorious gorgeous songs EVER by a NATIONAL TREASURE and had the NERVE to put HORRID GUITARS and their own DISGUSTING INDIE BOY VOICES on it!!!!!!!

"NATIONAL TREASURE" :D :D :D :D

o noes if we are completely mental how can we square that with the k.bush canon oh wait
