Funnily enough in the discussion in An Other place about the other Slate piece linked to within that one (the slightly shrieky "how DARE they call Stevie Merritt a racist!" one, although it cannot be denied that SFJ and Hopper fucked that one up royally), I suggested half-jokingly that calling someone a rockist was now considered worse than calling them a racist...

so did EMP lay into the whole current "guilty pleasures" thing?

and what's all this cruft about Merritt being a racialist??

Summary: Merritt indulging his epater le hipster Hongroiste tendencies (eg: "I only like black music up to Dizzy Gillespie"), says that he thinks 'Zip a dee doo da' is the only good happy song ever. S F-J accuses him of being a 'Song of the South' apologist, being a 'cracker', supporting slavery etc. Everyone gets in a big tizz. They all lez up. Fin.

Actually, I think at the time, Hopper accused him of etc etc, Sasha just linked to a post he'd made about Merritt a couple years back addressing the same issue.

i just read that the "zip-a-dee-doo-da" comment was in the context of guilty pleasures, which pulls that punch. also it makes me think that this explores the possibility of real actual guilty pleasures. i.e. not a song you love even tho "you shouldn't cos it's thort of as cheese/poor/low brow" but because the song is morally wrong, or tainted in some sense. (this really hadn't occurred to me til now!)

anti-gluttony = "you might end up knowing more than me (and therefore stop reading me), and that would never do" (?)

Ned pointed out on ILM that there is a difference between 'I Must Sample Everything Now Immediately' and 'I am grateful to be able to try lots of things which I will get around to when I can but in my own sweet time thankyou'. (I sort of agree, but for me it's still economics / CD shelf space that moderates how I consume new things more than anything.)

Ann Powers invoked the term in her paper, she quipped Anyone who uses the word quipped is worse than a "rockist," he is a journalist. Fed Up Spice P.S. Maybe now that I'm safe off in a comments thread, and not even using a koganbot identity, I'll say that Wolk's "sensible" Seattle Weekly piece was blah-blah-blah boring and blah-blah-blah stupid. If you're going to use a word like "normative" you have a responsibility to then identity what the norm's characteristics actually are, especially when the genre in question makes a point to glorify the defiance of norms. I like Douglas, from what I've read of him, but that piece was poo.
