SHINE 5: you know that it would suitcher! June 1996, the year Shine went MASSIVE in more ways than one, I think this is one of the best Shines yet, except for Shine 3 which was of course, my first Shine. This is the year Ash went "sensitive" and made "timeless touching pop moments" with Goldfinger and Oh Year, clearly a good move seeing as they appear on this compilation not once but TWICE - Marion and the Longpigs have their STRONGEST SONGS YET and the sodding Cranberries make yet ANOTHER baffling appearance. Audioweb make their first appearance on a Shine. WHY!!!

So, anyone remember Salt?? ON WITH THE VOTES!

Curse you and your "meaning". You're right though.

What is the phrase for mythical entities I'm thinking of then?

"white whale" would sorta work -- a semi-mythical beast that the capt ahabs of RnR are obsessively seeking (and when they find it destroys them)

i quite like the idea of "white elephants" as a critical concept -- qualities a band has been "blessed with" but want to get rid of and can't -- how i can't come up with any examples at the moment

when I interviewed Alex Smoke there was much talk about how he wanted to make really messy, rough sounding music, but whenever he tried he reverted to order and harmony (I think for a while he wanted quite desperately to get away from his classical background but now that he's talking about wanting to score film music and listening to nothing but Sibelius and Mozart the pendulum has probably swung back)
