SHINE 5: you know that it would suitcher! June 1996, the year Shine went MASSIVE in more ways than one, I think this is one of the best Shines yet, except for Shine 3 which was of course, my first Shine. This is the year Ash went "sensitive" and made "timeless touching pop moments" with Goldfinger and Oh Year, clearly a good move seeing as they appear on this compilation not once but TWICE - Marion and the Longpigs have their STRONGEST SONGS YET and the sodding Cranberries make yet ANOTHER baffling appearance. Audioweb make their first appearance on a Shine. WHY!!!

So, anyone remember Salt?? ON WITH THE VOTES!

Am I going to remain the only one who ticked Whipping Boy tho? (I *think* it was the Twinkle track I loved, they did have a rub follow-up... rather like HARVEY'S RABBIT oh yes)

The follow-up, 'We Don't Need Nobody Else' was "controversial" because the guy says "I hit you for the first time today" and wot if it was TRUE?!?11? But he also was snide about Bono in a very amusing way. I liked it. These were basically their only two good songs though. But what songs!

Man this one is full of GOLD!

I have only ticked Take It Easy Chicken for historical reasons that shall not be mentioned in this here place.

Stereotypes is an GRATE Blur song. DISCUS!

I think Charmless Man is good but not so much Stereotypes. Not sure why though.

Stereotypes is one of Blur's worst songs i.m.o. and I REALLY like Blur. Graham's guitar sounds really awful and the whole song sounds like lazy, mockney rubbish if you ask me.

I'm really sorry, but most of this looks like the worst music in the world ever (Shed 7; Dodgy; Levellers; Space; Super Furries; Marion; Gene; Ash; Longpigs; Ocean F***ing Scene). In other words an excellent dry run for rockin' Britain c. 2006 (Editors; Kaisers; Arctics; Fallout; Snow Patrol boy and all the other gloomy rock curmudgeons clogging up ver radio every time I put it on).

Despite the fact that it's currently in second place, not a single one of you HEATHENS has correctly answered that the best song on this Shine is, of course, 'You & Me Song' by The Wannadies.

You're all WRONG!

'Twas I who ticked the Cranberries, even though I can't really remember the song. But I suspect that this was one of the "heavy" ones with some nice yodelling on it.

Thinking about ALL these AWFUL bands makes me want to delete the world, and resign my throne as lord of all creation and let the Lex rebuild the universe from scratch and a few traces of Shakira's DNA.

Yours, God.

One of them outta Lush went to my uni. They had a picture of her framed on the wall*

* I might have imagined this. And yeah, I know loads of music types went to universities, but we're talking lo-fi universities, not your posho red-brick stuff.
