Popfrenzy '98 continues in Now 40 with Billie, Fatboy Slim and DJ DAZ!!!! making their first appearances on a Now (the latter in the guise of BUS STOP). The Spice Girls slide towards their end but the pop world they left behind is thriving.

Now 39 was closely fought but "Never Ever" pulled ahead to win it - double All Saints for your consideration this time - with Pulp, Cornershop and the Spice Girls close behind among a number of high-scoring contenders.

'Looking For Love' is one of those songs which proves the dictum that all great bangers are really ballads, and vice versa.

Well, it is "bad" in lots of ways. But also good, you know.

I'll definitely go back and tick Sparkle. Listened to it last night, and worth it on account of so many lovely details - the "if the shoe fits, wear it boy/girl" backing vocal - the stop/start verse with "wait a minute, let me finish!" - the accusations to and fro about their illegitimate 'little man'. Grebt.

Yeah, I love the way it's not just random accusation-flinging too, it's v clearly two sides of the same situation; they're both telling the truth but just from different perspectives, and there's no shying away from the emotional complexity of it all.

I think the vocal performances are incredible too - one of those occasions where extra melisma is really effective, melodramatic.
