poptimists in "listening to pop" shock

i'm only playing wit u. haven't felt inspired to blog anything in ages, hence not even bothering to do the weekly poptimists chart. Too busy reading interesting books about BRANEs (not attomickbranes) and doing things that involve trips to HOMEBASE and WICKES (i love being against the trend BECAUSE I AM INDIE). (Also, as of this morning I'm officially "concerned" about where ILX is going.) So this is a token to say I AM STILL HERE, INTERNETS. I am jaunty, hear me roar. like a little kitten.

How does that chart work? Does it merely add up the number of plays of certain songs by members of the poptimists community on last.fm? If so, then quite a great deal of that chart might be my fault, as I listened to those Girls Aloud songs, and the Pipettes song several times last week!

[identity profile] carsmilesteve.livejournal.com 2006-04-04 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
it's reach, so it doesn't matter if you or i listen to one song a grillion times if no one else listens to it.

Why the ILX concern? What fresh hell etc.

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-04-04 11:38 am (UTC)(link)
Alan doesn't like the proposed 'ignore user' function that's apparently gonna come in. But really now, I'd be surprised if it had a real noticeable negative effect on things.

[identity profile] freakytigger.livejournal.com 2006-04-04 11:55 am (UTC)(link)
The big mistake with A/D was giving anyone mod privs on it at all I think.

I agree with you re this stuff - the absentee landlord suddenly showing up to repaint the whole house pink - but I'm also quite personally pleased at how much I DON'T care. Nothing a pint later this week won't sort out.

[identity profile] braisedbywolves.livejournal.com 2006-04-04 11:58 am (UTC)(link)
I am to an extent getting annoyed here because someone should in theory be annoyed, I'm hoping to burn out my remaining dependence idealism re: ILX.

[identity profile] boyofbadgers.livejournal.com 2006-04-04 12:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I *think* I'm just about done with it now. I haven't read anything on ILE apart from Rolling London Dancing and the Tomally Wedding thread for over a fortnight, and I don't miss it at all.

[identity profile] braisedbywolves.livejournal.com 2006-04-04 12:09 pm (UTC)(link)
What we really need is for some passing billionaire to buy up ask.com and relaunch it as Ask Nabisco! and then we can put the whole project to bed.

Actually, Ally + Tom wedding = perfect excuse to delete the internet.

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-04-04 12:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I think half the boards should be deleted anyway! I don't care about Aja/Dante board. I guess it's just that everything Andrew thinks I happen to agree with so it's not bothering me. All has NEVER been well with ILX!

[identity profile] carsmilesteve.livejournal.com 2006-04-04 12:47 pm (UTC)(link)
HIVEMIND!!!

[identity profile] braisedbywolves.livejournal.com 2006-04-04 11:43 am (UTC)(link)
Andrew (other Andrew) is going ahead with an 'ignore user' feature despite the fact that a) nobody will use it, because even the most ridiculous posters have always produced something of value and b) if anyone does use it, it'll turn the board unreadable.

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-04-04 12:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Dan Perry and I will use it, for two! I think it will be more popular than you suggest. Clearly we don't mind compromising on context in this way. At the very least (as I said with reg-only) it can at least be an option that can be tried by whoever wants to try it. And the people who don't will carry on as they have, with no difference.

What is this madness? See what they're doing to our beautiful community of sweetness and light!

[identity profile] dubdobdee.livejournal.com 2006-04-04 01:21 pm (UTC)(link)
i think removing aja-dante is a bad idea strategically, cz it stirs that wasps' nest up then tosses it into the mainstream BUT i doubt it will make much diff -- dom and forks are perfectly capable of NOT being fake-esteban-like in their behaviour, and fake esteban is the least annoying full-on troll ever

[identity profile] braisedbywolves.livejournal.com 2006-04-04 01:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think either you or Dan will use it for long, particularly considering that you'll be ignoring generally well-behaved, articulate people with interesting things to say, who are also at times complete fvckheads (if I have your respective targets right).

You keep repeating that last sentence, and it keeps not being true. The problem for me as a non-ignorer isn't what I will or won't be allowed to see, but what will be there to be seen: a bunch of people going "what?" "who said that?" etc.

[identity profile] dorsalstop.livejournal.com 2006-04-04 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just going to ignore all of those...

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-04-04 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha ha, what else don't you think I will be doing for long?

you'll be ignoring generally well-behaved, articulate people with interesting things to say, who are also at times complete fvckheads (if I have your respective targets right).

the fvckheadery grossly outweights the former imo. nothing they've written strikes me personally as really worthwhile or worth preserving on my screen. but then, maybe i love it rly. put it this way, the people who annoy me, i don't want to be around them IRL either, in the same pub or whatever. so why be on the same online space as them either? you could take these people off ILX completely for me and i'd be fine with that. like when people leave the board because of such problems - it's fine, the board carries on, some people miss them and others don't.

so there's a facility to take someone off the board in your eyes, even if that is an illusion. i am interested and curious about the effects of this no doubt. i want to try it and see what happens. perhaps, as you say, it will fail. perhaps it will be a roaring sucess (at least in that i won't want to turn it off again).

You keep repeating that last sentence, and it keeps not being true.

well nor is it untrue. it won't be proven either way until it is tried out by some people. i suppose as with reg-only it will just replace old problems with new ones, but that's not really a reason NOT to try it.

take it back to The Other Place please, lets not have it sully our little garden of eden over here ;)

[identity profile] braisedbywolves.livejournal.com 2006-04-04 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
O blimey I only just noticed that this is on [livejournal.com profile] poptimists. Sorry!

[identity profile] dorsalstop.livejournal.com 2006-04-04 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, I'm just going to put everyone on 'ignore' except Esteban BUTTEZ. It will be the ideal message board. Only inane fun, none of that 'opinions' rubbish.

[identity profile] carsmilesteve.livejournal.com 2006-04-04 01:33 pm (UTC)(link)
why do you think i like lj so much!

bdum tsch

i'm here all week, ectect ;)

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-04-04 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
yes it is better arguing on the other place, if only because there we don't have avatars so i don't respond to YMOF half thinking it's my brother i'm arguing with ;)

Does anyone have the Pipettes track? I don't feel like talking about boring old ilx.

I agree that "ignore user" is insanely stupid, but I also doubt that it will make much difference. (I.e., I doubt that many people will use it, or if they do, I doubt that they'll go around saying "What?" all the time.)

Also, by the way, I still like ILX way more than Poptimists, and I don't mean that as a jibe at Poptimists.

They're officially banned here as well, though, aren't they?
