The Now polls are all good and proper, aren't they? But surely, around the time of Now 29, Now 30, a new breed of compilation entered the arena. Taking as it's theme the indie big hitters from the Now Polls, the mighty SHINE series catered to a growing crowd of kids who were reading about a new thing called "britpop" in Smash Hits. If you ask me, SH! always seemed rather obsessed with Damon All-Bran's TIBETAN LOVE BEAD necklace. Ew.

The first few Nows weren't averse to a bit of anachronistic rounding-up of tunes, I think.

With Shine/Best Album there were always a few older tracks though cos I think the compilers had some idea of educating the Britpop kids about the glories of indie past - "How Soon Is Now" was 9 years old when this came out?

I wonder if current Arctic Monkeys etc. comps have Tiger or Bis on for similar reasons? Probably not.

Vulgar picture? Don't mind if I do!

It occurs to me that it was around this time that HSN was re-released as part of the Smiths Best reissue doo-dah, so mebbe it was vaguely contemporary.

I think he was just being ded lazy (and needed a sleep ARF not rly) and wanted summat with a long instrumental that he could chat to CHARLENE from EPPIN', about why she wanted to bizarrely request George Michael wot owned Capital when her fave song was in fact TOXYGENE by VER ORB.

"That's a surprising choice, Charlene!"
"Hnarhnarhnar! I'm on the radio innit!"
"I didn't expect you to say that particular song, Charlene!"
"It's mental innit!"
