Brazil ran out worthy winners over Australia last night in their Group F opener, but the Poperoos had their share of chances and goals in a thrilling encounter. Brazil played dazzling football and never looked like losing, but thanks to some excellent team play in the Australian midfield, they never truly dominated. Both camps seemed optimistic last night - pundits are already comparing
thenipper's side with PWC 1970's Tropicalia heroes, and every neutral must be looking forward to their clash with Japan. As for the Australians, they refused to be downhearted in defeat. "If we play like that against Croatia and Japan, we'll qualify", said a source close to the team.
In the other group F game, two late goals gave Japan victory over a dogged and well-drilled Croatia side. The win was a fair reflection of Japan's greater skill and attacking play, though for most of the match they couldn't find a way through a maze of Croatian bodies. Commentators have wondered if the weight of expectations is affecting Japan's play, though with an ultimately comfortable win under their belt the team and management will have no such complaints.

To be honest I would quite like it if more people voted! I suppose downloading 20MB of MP3s isn't always easy especially from people on work accounts.
Re: Poptimism World Cup Overall Table
Date: 2006-02-23 11:43 am (UTC)Of course not, the whole point is finding this number! And since each voter gives out 20 points for each group, the group total divided by 20 yields number of voters (in case of no clerical errors, obv).
If I'm not completely mistaken, these are the average-points per voter results:
GERMANY - 6.3 Q1
Trinidad and Tobago - 6.215139442 Q1
GHANA - 5.68 Q1
ECUADOR - 5.566666667 Q2
IRAN - 5.403050109 Q1
CZECH REPUBLIC - 5.36 Q2
IVORY COAST - 5.28 Q1
SERBIA AND MONTENEGRO - 5.2 Q2
PORTUGAL - 5.185185185 Q2
HOLLAND - 5.12
England - 5.059760956 Q2
