Group C Report

Group C has given us some fantastically tense football and its final matches were no exception, with Holland boss [livejournal.com profile] freakytigger raging at the ref's decision to disallow a last-minute goal that would have sent his side through and Serbia and Montenegro home. As it is the ugly draw between these sides means the Balkan nation goes through on goals scored and it's manager [livejournal.com profile] umlauts who will be celebrating tonight. "The decision was a travesty," ranted the angry [livejournal.com profile] freakytigger, "That referee should never have been officiating at this level." The controversy centred on an intervention by [livejournal.com profile] miss_newham, whose ballot reading in part "Give Holland one or two extra points" was rendered invalid by FIPA for not having specified points totals. A FIPA official, coincidentally also named [livejournal.com profile] freakytigger, dismissed the Dutch protests: "The referee's decision is final and the Dutch manager of all people should know this."

Ivory Coast fans celebrate their Group C triumph

In Group C's other game Cote D'Ivoire gave a vibrant second-half display to defeat Argentina and send the Africans through to the second round as group winners. "This is a magnificent day for all of Africa," said a spokesman. The Ivoirian pop federation had surprised many by its appointment of [livejournal.com profile] poptasticuk, a young manager with a seeming lack of interest in African football, but she's proved her doubters wrong and will face the runner-up in tomorrow's Group D clash. Argentina supremo [livejournal.com profile] carsmilesteve saw his side play bright football but was left ruing their lack of stamina in the final stages of the game.

Final Score
IVORY COAST - 132 points (Qualify as Group winners)
SERBIA AND MONTENEGRO - 130 points (Qualify as runners-up)
HOLLAND - 128 points
ARGENTINA - 110 points

Another massive upset! Having been unable to vote due to a week spent overseas on an intense golfing bonding session with my players (which included utilising the services of a faith healer to enrich mental and spiritual wellbeing), I was unaware of the results and performances until today. I've just viewed some brief highlights from the clashes between these teams and I can't say I was grabbed by any team in particular so it would've been a close call from me - probably allocating evenly all round, so I doubt I could've made much difference to the outcome in the end. As with Sweden I was really hoping the Dutch would be able to demonstrate their powerful range by going through but it's nice to see the emerging nations through.

is Captain Hollywood on his own still Dutch? he had a solo effort some 11 or 12 years ago called 'Impossible' which sticks in my head to this day.

Ah, my hints and tips didn't help then. You didn't like the UDS track? I must admit it sounds very 1998 to me, which at this point is probably the worst year/period to sound like.

Drat. I should hav sent you something by Tower (early '80s prog-pop!)

Shocking Blue - ah yes, the time when Dutch bands actually 'broke' the US charts. Shocking Blue's "Venus" and The Golden Earring's "Radar Love" would have been a bit too obvious, I guess (but potential winners).

Dolly Dots: I prefer their earlier singles [/rockist], "Boys" and "Radio". The Dots are GREAT though. I finally got their Greatest Hits comp on CD last year. They were very much my little sister's faves when I was into Duran Duran, meaning I ignored/dismissed them for many years.

Charly Lownoise & Mental Theo - I agree that this sort of stuff is what the Dutch do best. It's "Wonderfull Days" [sic] by the way! :-)

What/who is/are Wedlock???

Well, exactly!

'Radar Love' is to Us Dutch what American Pie/Bo Rhap/Music (was my first love)/Imagine/Wonderwall is to you. EXCEPT IT'S REALLY GOOD.

Hocus Pocus by Focus? Hmm yes, suppose you're right.
(Also I guess the Dutch 'American Pie' is either 'I remember Elvis Presley' by Danny Mirror or 'Tis weer voorbij die mooie zomer' by Gerard Cox, but I won't expose you to either)

Mr. Freakytigger, do you not know of Technohead's "I Wanna Be a Hippy" and Back 2 Bass's "I Wanna Be With You"? I wouldn't say they would have defeated the passionate Serbo-Montenegrans on my ballot, but even a tie would have gotten the Dutch into the next round, and a 1 point defeat would have pulled them into a tie. (Assuming I remember how I voted, which I'm not sure I do.)

I never found out if Richard Cameron was called Richard Cameron because of a British/Irish/American/etc father or sth.
I think they were of pure Dutch blood, yes :-)

But I support the Holland manager's decision in the end, if only out of regionalism (Nance is a fellow southerner).

All in the Mental Rave category, but with considerable pop hooks:
DJ Paul Elstak - Luv U More (http://s13.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0NOREHI5VZLV10CYCZJROUR1IK)
Charlie Lownoise & Mental Theo - Hardcore Feelings (http://s13.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1GL56WU22DQAT0RP5JRG7100G6)
Party Animals - Atomic (http://s13.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=266M9I93Z62490A09C27IJXPP5) (yes, that Atomic)

Oh noes! The action, the excitement, the controversy. Myself and [livejournal.com profile] miss_newham were agreed that Holland's bosh was most enjoyable, but perhaps the high guy-rapping-in-broken-English-with-nonsense-lyrics factor was just too much for most people...?

Assuming this wasn't all purely tactical there is a distinct sensibility split between "penny plain" and 'tuppence twinkly" i think -- i loved the Cd'I cz throughout its reach it wz full of little darts and dabs, though i suppose i am also sensitized to same as i wrote about this stuff for many years and got used to making distinctions within the sound; ditto to a lesser extent S&M

(er "this stuff" = african pop)

argentina lost out by REALLY reminding me of a song i liked better, which is juist (bad) luck of the draw

I note that in the unlikely event that the all-conquering favourites, Angola (free-scoring, glamorous, everyone's second favourite team, etc.), finish as shockingly low as second in group D, we would play Cote d'Ivoire in the last 16 - would this be the first all African tie in the history of the, um, Pop World Cup?
