Pie Chart Topping

Morningwood - Nth Degree 9
Sir Lancelot - Pan american way 9
Bodies Without Organs - Gone 9

Gene Serene & John Downfall - The Hours 7

Coldplay - Talk (Jacques Lu Cont Mix) 6
The Knife - Neverland 6

The Knife - silent shout 5
Cat Power - The Greatest 5
The Knife - The captain 5
The Knife - Marble house 5

Morningwood still at the top, but now sharing their slice of the pop pie at 9 plays each with Pop World Cup entries: Bodies Without Organs (yay the all conquering* swedes) and Sir Lancelot (plucky Trinidad/Tobago). England trailing behind in 4th place... BREAKING NEWS swedes swizzed as England qualify!! What mad science is this?

However winning on points - as predicted last week- are Teh Knife with FOUR songs. My that's almost an entirely new album there. I suspect that the mysterious TARWATER may feature here next week. SEE YOU THEN

did you make the PIE gif yourself dear?

i must concur and say that this is the indiest chart yet...

Teh Knife = textbook definition of indie music which indie music fans like to think of as pop, shurely. Given it takes a sensitive acoustic cover of Heartbeats to get it into the pop charts it clearly ain't pop in its original form...

[identity profile] freakytigger.livejournal.com 2006-01-31 12:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Heartbeats aside, I find the Knife pretty dire in non-remixed form - what off the new album should I hear to change this?

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-01-31 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
i doubt you'll like it as it's GOTHTRONICA with glacial synths a go go, tho i find it all quite marvellous

didn't you like 'Is It Medicine?' off 'Deep Cuts'?

Off the new album: "Marble House".

NO WAI

indie has to involve guitars - simple golden rule #1 - The Knife don't use them. Kate Bush is indier than The Knife.

A Quiet Admission

I quite like non-guitar indie.

I like loads of Magnetic Fields songs, they were my favourite band at one point.

I like loads of guitar indie too obv!

[identity profile] steviespitfire.livejournal.com 2006-01-31 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] freakytigger.livejournal.com 2006-01-31 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)

Gene Serene! Nice!

LJ's threading at 50 madness tho means someone needs to reformulate and repost a new question.

I think the pop vs indie thing is kind of played out really, we only stress it to tease Teh Lex (speaking for myself anyway), but the "what is pop" argument is more leggy.

It is very studied yes - this is what's interesting about Sweden, and attractive to some pop lovers, the way pop-as-style-and-ethos does seem to have a privileged place in its music culture, probably this is the real legacy of ABBA.

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-01-31 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I hear a lot of Knife songs and think 'Pop', for whatever reason (sonically I suppose, primarily, but I do think there's more to it than just that).

Indie is a pop idea. Doesn't need to be imported.
